Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Gervinho was the one Ivory Coast player who really impressed at WC in South Africa, plus he plays on the right. We'd have the Tourex2 link as well.

Seems a crazy amount of money given that he's only got a year left on his contract though. Still, it's probably bollocks.

Anyway, the OP in this thread has said his neck is on the line, so I take it he didn't just nab this rumour from that silly thread on Bluemoon?

All of the above aside, I'll have Modric in a hearbeat.

Damn right Dub, he is a superb footballer. I thought he was the best player on the pitch when we beat Spuds near the end of the season, total class.

couldnt disagree more!

Modric is nothing like silva, modric is exactly what we need, i dread if the rags sign him as he is one of the best cm around. A midfield of him yaya and de jong would be best in the league, his signing would have no effect on silva who plays out wide. Its apples and oranges for me im afraid when comparing the two...

i agree with your disagreement, but disagree that it's apples and oranges.
last season we were all shitting it at the thought of Silva going out through injury.
having another player like Silva around (i think they are similar) would calm my fears if one was to miss any games.
Berbatov wins golden boot, spends following season on the bench while his team loses title on goal difference. Well played, Fergie.

He usually starts on the left and drifts in slightly, then switches to the right, where are u suggesting he plays? centre midfield??

A fairly free role between the lines, wherever space appears.

A bit like that little fella from Spurs whose name escapes me.

I honestly disagree, i dont think silva had as much a free role as you make out while modric certainly didnt have a free role at spurs, he played centre midfield, a little withdrawn from the from the front(funnily check out the rumours thread where two others point this out). The only person who had a free role for spurs was VDV when playing up front with Crouch/Another. Have you watched much of spurs?

In my opinion our formation was something like this(midfield trio were more compact than my shit diagram shows but you get the picture):

-----------JH------

MR-----VK----JL---Ak
----------NDJ---------
--------------GB------
----------YYT---------
--AJ---------------DS--
----------CT----------

With Modric, id replace GB with him and mix it up between LM and YYT, it would have no effect on DS position, hence my apple and oranges analogy, Modric doesnt play the same position as Silva. Our line up be somethin like this:

-----------JH------

MR-----VK----JL---Ak
----------NDJ---------
--------------YYT/LM------
----------YYT/LM---------
--AJ---------------DS--
----------CT----------

Get what im saying now?

Yes he does. Who have you been watching?

I can count on one hand the number of times Silva has started as one of our midfield 3. He has played almost exclusively as part of three man attack on the inside left or inside right position.

You're falling for the football stereotype of a short, technically blessed player being the same as the next short, technically blessed player. They are very different players. Modric looks to dictate games and pull the strings in the middle of the park, Silva uses his guile, quality on the ball and positional awareness to hurt teams from the flanks.

They are the same in stature and ability but very different in the roles they deliver their best results in.

I should add that I feel Modric should do more to dominate games but technically he's top drawer and I'd be happy with the signing. All hypothetical as this is most likely bollox.

I'm not "falling for" anything. I'm a season ticket holder who goes to every game and I trust my own eyes.

Modric is someone who lines up in the middle, especially when Bale and Lennon play, but he doesn't stay central. He drifts about and gets into whatever space he can. He plays a bit deeper than Silva when Spurs play two up, but ordinarily he plays at the top of a diamond. That's also Silva's preferred position, and where we play him when Tevez is the one up.

Regardless of any rigid classifications about CM/RM/LM/free role/whatever, they serve the same function for their respective sides: setting the tempo, controlling possession, dictating play.

We don't need anyone else to come in and do that job.

So, are you saying that Silva plays through the middle for us or are you acknowledging that he plays inside left or inside right for us, more often than not.

I can't remember seeing him at the head of a diamond for us very often.
