McClaren approached by Forest

Postby bobby brows » Sun Jun 12, 2011 3:45 pm

Could be a decent appointment for Forest if his Twente form continues.

Steve McClaren looks set to become the manager of Nottingham Forest after the club terminated the contract of Billy Davies.

The Scot has left the club with immediate effect having been manager since 2008. Davies's departure does not come as a great shock given his fractious relationship with the Forest board and the fact that they recently suffered a second successive defeat in the Championship play-off semi-finals.

Somewhat unusually, however, Forest have revealed in a official statement that they are speaking to McClaren about taking over at the City Ground.

The former England manager has been out of work since being sacked by Wolfsburg in February. He was last week linked with the vacancy at Aston Villa before the club, responding to supporters' protests, decided not to interview the 50-year-old.

It depends what his backroom staff is like - if he's able to delegate everything to them and take credit for any success I suppose he could do a 'Twente' again. If not it's another Wolfsburg waiting to happen.

Only in England does a failure with a perennial failing national team ensure it will haunt you for the rest of your career.

Decent manager that should not be trawling around the Championship.

What's the excuse for his Wolfsburg performance then?

Hopeless manager, terrible appointment. Could be surpassed by Villa choosing McLeish though!

In McClaren's case it's not just that though. He is quite poor and tactically very naive manager. McClaren got England job only because of the campaign that they should have English manager and I actually felt sorry for him as I know from the beginning, as did most other football following people with no political agenda, that it'd turn messy.

I think it showcased just how poor McClaren was tactically that he was probably Middlesbrough's most succesfull manager ever, yet they were happy to see back of him.

One thing he does well though is surround himself with people who are million miles better in their jobs than McClaren himself. That often brings certain level of improvement even if his teams are horrible to watch. That, I suppose, is talent itself. But if they think that McClaren is going to come in and take them up for sure next year, they are wrong .
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

I think you are doing him a dis-service NQDP. McLaren is as dull as dishwater, however, he is a very good coach. You cant argue with a lot that he has done in his career. He has made some howlers and his judgement of his own ability is his achilles heel. He should stick to what he does very well, being 2nd in command. Having said that, I think he will do well with Forest next year.
