Funeral for ex-City captain Mike Doyle to be held later
Image
The funeral of former Manchester City captain Mike Doyle will be held in his home town later.
Doyle - the most decorated player in City's history - died last month at the age of 64, after being treated for liver failure.
The father-of-four made more than 550 appearances between 1962 and 1978 and played alongside greats Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee.
The service will be held at Ashton parish church at 1300 BST.
Doyle signed for City as an apprentice in 1962, making his first team debut two years later.
He quickly became an integral part of the team that won the League title in 1968, the FA Cup in 1969, and the European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup, both in 1970.
He also captained the side that won the League Cup again in 1976.
After leaving Maine Road, he went on to play for Stoke, Bolton and Rochdale.
He also appeared for England on five occasions.

Manchester City in no panic over selling Carlos Tevez
Manchester City are in no rush to meet striker Carlos Tevez's demand to leave Eastlands and are likely to ask in excess of £40m to consider selling.
BBC Sport understands Tevez's latest request to leave City has left chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak "sanguine" about developments.
The club believe they are in a position of strength over any potential Tevez transfer and are in no mood to plead with the striker to stay.
A spokesman said: "Carlos is a contracted player to Manchester City for another three years and we have had no offers for him."
Tevez, 27, asked City for a transfer in December and while it now seems inevitable he will eventually move on, City are relaxed about the latest twist and are determined he will only leave when the time and price is right for them.
City are willing to play a long game until the right deal comes along City boss Roberto Mancini insisted recently that Tevez would stay after a proposed swap deal with Inter Milan for striker Samuel Eto'o fell through - but there is still no great shock inside Eastlands after Tevez made his desire to leave public once again.
The Argentina international wants to be reunited with his family - with Milan believed to be a favoured destination - but there is unlikely to be a swift resolution with City determined not to be railroaded into a deal by the player and his advisors.
City's stance on Tevez is hardened by the fact that he is on a contract reportedly worth in excess of £200,000-a-week, while there is no pressing need for cash to flow into Eastlands given the vast wealth of the club's Abu Dhabi owners.
The cost of any Tevez transfer will limit the market, with Inter Milan sporting director Marco Branca recently insisting the Serie A club would not make a move because they were unable to afford the wage packet he was receiving at City.
Branca told BBC Sport: "Tevez is a great player, a great character, but absolutely no. His salary means it is out of the question. The market is crazy at the moment and it is hard to compete." BBC

Gael Clichy admits it was 'very difficult' to leave Arsenal and join Manchester City
Left-back concedes that he learned a lot from his former manager Arsene Wenger, and maintains that he had trouble coming to terms with pledging allegiance to another club
Goel Clichy admits that he found it very difficult to walk away from Arsenal and join the ranks at Manchester City.
The 25-year-old made 264 appearances for the Gunners over a period of eight seasons, before making a move to Eastlands for a fee reported to be in the region of £7 million.
Having spent so much time at the north London club, the left-back retains a very high regard to his former boss Arsene Wenger and remains grateful for learning his trade under the former Monaco manager.
"Leaving Arsenal was a really big thing for me," Clichy told The Sun.
"Arsene Wenger helped me grow up as a person and player.
"He taught me everything - how to be a footballer, how to be a man.
"And saying goodbye was very emotional, very difficult because I have been there so long."
He added: "I was 17 when I joined Arsenal and had eight happy years there.
"I had a lot of friends there and in London - but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
"And I felt the need to make a change and in the end that was it, that was the key.
"But it was still a very weird situation for me walking in here at City.
"Walking into the stadium and seeing all those blue seats around me when I'm so used to the red. That was very weird.
"But in life I believe it's all about timing and this is the perfect timing for me to make the change."

City players return for pre-season amid Tevez speculation
Carlos Tevez’s transfer request has shown little sign of disrupting proceedings for Manchester City, with players returning for the first day of pre-season training yesterday and Stefan Savic expected to soon be confirmed as the club’s second signing of the summer.
Partizan Belgrade defender Savic, who has been in Manchester for a medical, is poised to complete his move to Eastlands just days after the arrival of Gael Clichy from Arsenal.
City are yet to make an official response to Tevez’s announcement on Monday night that he wants to quit the Blues, but it is likely to be have been met by club officials with little more than a resigned shrug.
The move was anticipated by the City hierarchy and they can relax in the knowledge that Tevez – who expressed similar sentiments about leaving in December only to be talked round by manager Roberto Mancini and owner Sheikh Mansour – has three years remaining on a contract that is estimated to be worth in excess of £200,000-a-week.
That means they have no reason to allow their 27-year-old skipper to go on the cheap and with the potential price-tag for the forward being up to £50million, his list of realistic suitors is not long.
Tevez, currently on international duty with Argentina at the Copa America, has cited a desire to be closer to his daughters.
It is something for which former City midfielder Garry Flitcroft has a certain amount of sympathy.
“When I signed for Blackburn from Manchester City, I could have gone to Arsenal,” Flitcroft told Sky Sports News.
“But I didn’t want to go to London because I didn’t want to leave my family, so in a way, I can tell what (Tevez) is saying.
“I’m sure for the City fans – and I’m a City fan as well – it is a big shock. They won’t want to lose Carlos Tevez because he is a fantastic player.
“You only have a short career, but at the end of the day, your kids are only young once as well.
“Whether this is an excuse to get away from there and go to another club, I don’t know, but I can see his issues, with wanting to be close to his family.”
It had been suggested that Liverpool might be looking to make a late bid to hijack Savic’s move to City, but it is the Blues who are set to seal the 20-year-old Montenegro international’s signature, subject to them securing a work permit for him.
Meanwhile, reported City target Sergio Aguero has confirmed he has received an offer from Juventus, but the striker insists his future will only be decided after the Copa America.
Aguero, Tevez’s international team-mate, announced his wish to leave Atletico Madrid last month.
“I am aware of Juve’s offer but only when the Copa America is over, will my future destination be known,” Aguero told reporters.
“There are negotiations going on with the Italian club but I don’t know how many millions they have offered for my services.”

ROBERTO MANCINI has drawn up a hit list of big-name targets he wants to replace Carlos Tevez at Eastlands according to Joe Royle. But former Manchester City boss Joe Royle has told Mancini he is facing mission impossible.
Those on Mancini’s radar include Didier Drogba, David Villa and Sergio Aguero.
But Royle reckons Mancini is on a hiding to nothing because no-one can have the same impact on City as Tevez.
Speaking exclusively to Starsport from his holiday villa in Majorca, Royle said: “It’s such a shame for the club because Tevez is talismanic.
“He scores goals, creates goals, works hard for the team and is the complete modern striker. It’s hard to make comparisons with him.
“The game has goal- scorers and people who drop off, but not people with his energy levels.
“He will be very, very hard to replace. Roberto will have someone in mind, I’m sure, but Tevez is someone who might not be able to be replaced like-for-like.
“It’s not an easy position for Mancini and his board to deal with. City have all-round strength in attacking areas, but your talisman is always the hardest to replace.”
Tevez has angered sections of City fans by wanting out but Royle believes the former Manchester United star should be given the benefit of the doubt – for now.
Royle, who managed City between 1998 and 2001, added: “I can’t see a way in which Tevez will stay. I hope he does, because I think City are on the verge of something big this coming season.
“But you have to take him at face value. If he wants to leave for family reasons then you have to respect the fact he’s putting his family first.
“City may try and make him stay, of course and dig their heels in because they are quite within their rights to do so.
“It’s not like he’s just come here from Argentina is it? He’s been at West Ham and then Manchester United, so you do wonder if there are other motives involved.
“He doesn’t seem to hang around in one place for too long.”

We've got Nasri! Manchester City claim £19m deal for Arsenal rebel
Manchester City believe they have captured Arsenal playmaker Samir Nasri for £19million.
The deal is close to completion and will represent a significant victory for City with both Manchester United and Chelsea also keen on landing the Frenchman.
The fact that City are grabbing Nasri just 24 hours after Carlos Tevez told Sportsmail of his wish to leave the club is also seen as an important moment for a club who will play in the Champions League for the first time this season.
After the signing of Gael Clichy for £7m earlier this week, the Nasri move represents another serious loss for Arsenal to one of their Barclays Premier League rivals.
City are also tracking a frontline replacement for Tevez and expect another transfer powerplay by owner Sheik Mansour within the next week. Mail

The rags had attacking players who up their game & battle like fuck, like Tevez does & produce the goods when under pressure.

Giggs, Rooney, Scholes etc. Most of our attackers tend to go into a bit of a shell when things go against them. We need to find that player or players with a bit about them, not just pure ability, to fill the hole left by Tevez or our team will lose something.

Wednesday's Rumour Mill

Carlos Tevez may or may not be considering a move to Spain or Italy in order to be a very little bit closer to his family in Argentina but the suggestion that he is justifies the Mill's decision to coin the Carlos Tevez Syndrome, of which we find several other suspected sufferers today. Asamoah Gyan, for instance, is believed to have added Stoke City to the list of possible destinations as he seeks to leave Sunderland because candystriped jerseys don't agree with him; Gabriel Agbonlahor is excited about the (remote) possibility of moving to Paris Saint-Germain because he has always wanted to live by the coast; and Paul Konchesky is determined to reject all moves away from Liverpool because he wants first-team football.

Speaking of Liverpool, as the Mill has been warned it must do on a daily basis in order to pre-empt a hysterical internet campaign condemning a blatant pro-Manchester United bias, word is Kenny Dalglish will switch his affection from Stewart Downing to Spanish conjurer Juan Mata after Aston Villa rejected his £15m bid.

Dalglish is also weighing up an offer for Monaco's South Korean striker Park Chu-Young, who is being coveted by Milan, amongst others, but has his heart set on Anfield because he has been a Liverpool fan ever since he was in nappies with Frode Kippe-branded nappies. Meanwhile, reports in France claim that PSG have offered Guillaume Hoarau to Liverpool and two other unnamed English clubs, though why they think Liverpool would want a 27-year-old striker with a patchy goal-scoring record and wavering relevance to matches is not clear. It's as if something has convinced PSG that Liverpool are absolute mugs in the transfer market yet there is no obvious reason why they would think this? Isn't that right, David Ngog?

West Ham are a club that get far more coverage than they deserve and, as such, will no doubt turn the next Championship season into a particularly low-rent version of I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!

Apparently Niko Kranjcar's desperation for a match means he would like to go there all the same, but Spurs have placed a £12m price tag in his path, causing an impasse that suits no one. Harry Redknapp, meanwhile, is preparing to freshen up his bench with Joe Cole and revamp his defence with both Roger Johnson and Christopher Samba, if only to provoke jealous sobbing from Arsenal fans.

The exodus from Arsenal, meanwhile, will continue with the sale of … a player whom the Mill assumed had left long ago: yes, Armand Traoré could be on his way to Hamburg or Werder Bremen: Arsène Wenger's reign is coming apart at the seams! The club's in meltdown! Will they even have 11 players by the time the season starts? And so on and so forth.

Mind you, no one seems to have told Leighton Baines, who at this very moment may be slipping into his car and preparing to guide it to the Emirates with the same precision he uses to send crosses into the box. Could it be that Wenger really is about to dramatically alter his erstwhile policy and splash out? And, what's more, actually encourage Arsenal to stick in crosses?

Much more in keeping with Wenger's recent behaviour, no doubt, would be a move for QPR trickster Adel Taarabt, who is exactly the sort of player that Arsenal don't need but is, according to TalkSport, a genuine target for the club. The Sun, meanwhile, reckon that Inter's Thiago Motta is the man to replace Cesc Fábregas, who – and this is a Mill exclusive – today finds himself the subject of a sensational link with Barcelona. Gervinho, meanwhile, is in London today to talk about all of this and much more with Wenger.

Falcao is on his way to Stamford Bridge, perhaps to perform a reprise of his almost-forgotten hit single Rock me, André Villa-Boas.

Manchester United … Wesley Sneijder … you know the story.

West Brom want Shane Long but not at £10m.

Finally, one-time in-house resident of the Mill, Franck Ribéry, returns to his jaded old stomping ground today to scoff at reports of an imminent move to Newcastle.

Whether we beat them in one game has no relevance to what I'm saying . I didn't say they were unbeatable or even that good, I said they have/had more attacking players with similar battling attitude to Tevez rather than just raw ability. They won the league & got to the Champion's Lg final mainly because of it.
