Arsène Wenger has warned Uefa president Michel Platini that the credibility and future of 'financial fair-play’ is at stake following Manchester City’s new £400 million sponsorship deal.

City’s 10-year agreement with Etihad Airlines covers the naming rights of the stadium, shirt sponsorship and financial backing for an area of land around the stadium that will be redeveloped to become known as the Etihad Campus.
However, as part of its incoming financial fair play regulations, Uefa has made it clear that sponsorship deals will be tested for fair market value.
Etihad is owned by the Abu Dhabi government and the airline’s association with the City owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family, is prompting particular suspicion. City now have five sponsorship deals from companies based in Abu Dhabi.
“The credibility of financial fair play is at stake,” said Wenger. “If it is to have a chance, the sponsorship has to be at the market price. It cannot be doubled, tripled or quadrupled, because that means it is better we don’t do it and leave everybody free.
“That can be defended but, if they bring the rules in, they have to be respected. If they give us the message you can get around it by doing what we want it means financial fair play will not come in.”

Wenger, though, has faith Platini will properly scrutinise the City deal.
“It looks to me that he is very strongly determined,” Wenger said. “This is his big test. He is not stupid, he knows that some clubs will try to get around that and I believe they are studying how they can really strongly check it. That is where financial fair play is at stake.”
Wenger stressed that he did not know whether City’s sponsorship deal with Etihad had constituted fair market value but will be well aware of the comparison with Arsenal, whose Emirates deal for naming rights and shirt sponsorship was worth £100 million over 15 years. “We must have done a bad deal,” he smiled.
City last night launched a robust defence of the deal and, without naming Wenger, said recent comments had been “unfounded and regrettable”.
“Manchester City are working actively and with transparency with regard to Financial Fair Play. In light of these facts, recent comments by some observers are unfounded and regrettable,” the club said.
“The financial details of the agreement between Manchester City and Etihad Airways remain confidential and the figures being speculated about are not accurate. However, the elements at the heart of the agreement include the securing for 10 years of one of the Premier League’s top ranked media value shirts in 2010-11, the 10-year naming rights for the Etihad Stadium and the naming rights for the Etihad Campus.”
The principle of financial fair play is that clubs should not spend more than they naturally generate. It means that vast losses on players and wages cannot be supported by the wealth of a billionaire benefactor. City’s latest financial figures reported a £121 million loss. However, the club have been in regular consultation with Uefa and are well aware of the requirements.
It could be particularly significant that part of the deal will go towards developing the Etihad Campus, as Uefa does not count money spent on improving infrastructure, regenerating surrounding areas and youth development in assessing losses.
While the ability of some clubs to attract sponsorship has been affected by the global downturn, City are likely to point to other recent major deals. Barcelona, for example, secured a five-year shirt deal worth £125 million with the Qatar Foundation this year.
The new rules apply from this accounting year, although Uefa will not begin its assessment of club accounts until the 2013-14 season. The Uefa licensing unit will analyse club accounts from the previous two seasons, requiring clubs to break even, subject to an “acceptable deviation” of €45 million (£40 million) over that period. The acceptable deviation then reduces on a sliding scale.
“We are aware of the situation and our experts will make assessments of fair value of any sponsorship deals,” a Uefa spokesman said.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, the whingeing old cunt was always going to pipe up at some point. On the other hand, at least they can't be accused of hypocrisy at Arsenal as they have been getting their house in order financially for the last few years. That was no less 'questionable' and no more 'fair' than what we're doing now. Tough tits, but I do have a modicum of sympathy for Arsenal.

Oh yeah, and belonging to the same group but as long as they don't spend the hundreds of millions they rake in, that's okay I suppose.

No, but to be fair we're going to be doing a lot of this as well. We're also about to join the CL 'the income's ours/fuck you' party.

These FFP rules are fucked up because you can only bring in a competitive amount of income if playing in the CL. Far from narrowing the gap, it's going to perpetuate the yawning chasm between haves and have-nots. And when it does, Platini, not us, will be to blame.

Has Cook, the Etihad CEO or anyone actually stated what the amounts are in this whole deal? Or have the journos just thrown figures in as fishing bait so chumps like Wenger and the Liverpool owner get caught in the net by sounding off? I know half of my 'mates' have developed something like rabies when City's deals are brought up round me.

Ignoring the redevelopment of the surrounding area which most reporters seem to do, IF the sponsorship money is in the region of £300-400k then why not? Who knows what the ceiling is? Therefore apply a huge sponsorship deal knowing it will be investigated and if UEFA shave off a portion of the money then City still have a great deal, know how far they can go, analyse the parameters where it failed and then work on a soution to that for future benefit.

Other clubs benefit as they know precisely how far they can go re sponsorship deals and the grey areas of FFP become a bit clearer to all. City do the dirty work.

And that cocksmoker Wenger should STFU. He bangs on about economic models etc, buy what you generate by selling and all that. Well if clubs like City and Chelsea were pegged back, Arsenal would be hobbled as they would have no one to sell their players on to for extortionate prices.
