Another one to test the memory banks ...

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Another one to test the memory banks ...

Postby Kladze » Tue Jul 26, 2011 12:38 pm

Forgive me - I think the close season is finally catching up with me ;-)

Who is the worst player you recall seeing play for City?

I've seen some dross but, by a country mile, the worst has to be Roy Gratrix (Doug will no doubt remember him).

Give him a 20 yard start in a 15 yard race and he'd still come in last.

Most odd player?

For me, Vic Gomersall.
A left back who had a pot belly of a size to make a pregnant woman wince, and yet was surprisingly fleet of foot. Looked funny as fuck as he 'bounced' his way up and down the wing.

Do you again mean "first shit player" or just overall worst EVER?
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

I'll raise your RSC with a Ralph Brand. We paid £25,000 (some sort of record fee then) to some Scottish club (Hibs?) for him. As a footballer he was fucking dreadful and as a striker he didn't even get to be as good as dreadful.

Adrian Heath, as a striker he was risible, what did he get for us 2,3, 4 goals in about 70 games?

Ok.

Believe it or not, I wasn't always negative bastard and for a long time I idolised just about every player who pulled on the shirt. However I seem to remember wondering about guy called Trevor Christie mid-80's based on probably couple of games.

Worst ever? That's a tough one. I could name half of 97/98 team. Ged Brannan, Tony Vaughan, Eddie McGoldrick, Martyn Margetson etc. These were genuinely fucking horrible football players. I'll go with Eddie McGoldrick, 'cause he was just crap.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Clough was underachiever. He was far from WORST ever player for us imo. I think he'd been in discussion if this was about worst ever buy. Even in that department Jo and RSC are both WELL ahead of him.

It was only around 2000 that live games began being shown with any frequency in Aus, yet you could still tell the likes of Immel, Weah, the non-Kinky Georgians were awful.

Trabelsi, Dabo and Nery Castillo would be up there with signings since the Pearce era. The obligatory ones like Vuoso, McPointy, Charvet, Seaman and RSC deserve mention.

Negouai was a legend though. Quite like Sommeil too.

Many shit players to choose from.

Gerry Creaney was probably my top shitehouse. Lee Bradbury and Steve Daley (for the money we paid) were absolute dogshit.

Other classics Rae Ingram, Rae Kelly, David Brightwell, Barry Conlon, Bill Williams (homesick for Stockport), Terry Park, Ged Brannan, Martyn Margetson, Ade Mike, Simon Treacey, John Burridge, Kevin Langley, Chris Shuker, Mikkel Bischoff, and of course the mysterious £4m Mathias Vuoso - that deal never was explained, nor the reason why KK never played the guy. Christian Negouai too had the bizarrest City career, with multiple sendings off and a great Volleyball goal against Rotherham.

Older ones, Ged Keegan and Bobby Shinton, and finally a player I had hoped to cast from memory but cant, our big Ozzie summer signing - first player signed by KK - the one the only (thank god) Simon Colosimo.

Ricky Holden - Came with a fanfare from Quinny saying he was looking forward to knocking in a few goals from the best crosser of a ball in the country! Shame he had the pace of a snail and touch of a buffalo. Holden was never able to get past the full back, neither could beckham but at least he found a work around, Holden just got dispossessed or blocked time and time again, infuriating to say the least.

Especially as we sold Michael Hughes to get him.

Martyn Margetson is the worst for me. He looked absolutely terrified. And so was I whenever the ball went anywhere near him. I'm sure he's a top bloke and all that but I just couldn't stand watching him. I hate having a go at City players who I know were trying their best. Perhaps it just meant too much to him.
