The nuclear option - Eto'o comes or Tevez stays

Postby john@staustell » Sat Jul 30, 2011 7:01 am

It is just possible that Aguero is not a replacement for Tevez, and that he may still be replaced.

At times last year we were struggling for strikers, with Tevez injured or off on one, Balotelli suspended or injured or both, and we just scraped through really. With all the demands of the season coming up, is Aguero, Balotelli and Dzeko enough? Bearing in mind that Bobby had 6 at Inter for one position. Gudetti has yet to comvince me at any rate.

So as it seems we are going to go for the title in a big way, with at least another 2 signings according to Mr M, a midfielder and a winger, is it possible the straight swap deal for Eto'o will help us to the title and scare the wits out of Scum, Chelski and any other deluded pretenders? As long as he doesn't piss about so much this time, which I dont think he will.

The Telegraph seems to think so today. And of course there is always the option of Tevez staying.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... -Etoo.html

Manchester City and Inter Milan will hold talks over a swap deal involving Carlos Tévez and Samuel Eto’o this weekend.

Both clubs are in Ireland for the Dublin Super Cup pre-season competition which also involves Celtic. Manchester City and Inter will meet on Sunday.
It is understood that the deal being proposed is a straight swap — valuing each player at around £40 million — with City keen to offload Tévez, who wants to leave, after signing Sergio Agüero for £38 million from Atlético Madrid as his replacement. Their wages are thought to be comparable.
Ironically City had hoped to pair Tévez and Eto’o as their strike-force two years ago. They signed Tévez but failed to land Eto’o after becoming frustrated with negotiations.
The club pulled out of talks with Barcelona, with chief executive Garry Cook making a public statement. The Cameroon striker then tried to resurrect the deal before he eventually moved to Inter, where he won the Champions League in his first season.
Eto’o, 30, is now believed to want to move to City and secure one final big contract before the end of his career. Preliminary talks have been held between the two clubs, over the phone, in the last few days and it is hoped they will be formalised in Dublin this weekend.

City held tentative discussions earlier this summer about the swap deal but that was abandoned again because of Eto’o’s demands. He has been trying to negotiate a new deal at Inter, without success, and is open to the move.
Despite a difficult campaign last season, Eto’o scored 21 goals while Tévez was the Premier League’s top scorer.
Tévez was close to securing a transfer back to South America, rejoining the Brazilian club Corinthians, but that collapsed. Corinthians ran out of time as the South American transfer window closed and there was dispute over the payments after a fee of £40 million was close to being agreed.
Inter have been one of three European clubs who have expressed an interest in Tévez, along with Juventus and Real Madrid, and it is thought that the player’s adviser, Kia Joorabchian, flew to Italy this week to see whether a deal was possible.
City had said they would not sell Tévez to a European club for less than £50  million but that is negotiable given the urgency for him to go and the possibility of Eto’o arriving.
Tévez, 27, cited a desire to be closer to his wife and two daughters — who struggled to settle in England — as the reason for wanting to quit City this summer, having already submitted a transfer request at the end of last year.
He had hoped that meant a move to Corinthians but it is believed that he would regard moving to Italy, and living in Milan, as a compromise that would persuade his wife, Vanessa, to spend more time in Europe.
Eto’o would expect to partner Agüero in a new-look City attack as they attempt to win the Premier League next season.
It means, however, that City also now have to concentrate their efforts on trying to off load Emmanuel Adebayor and Craig Bellamy.
Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Adebayor but also want City to heavily subsidise his wages.
Real have pulled out of any move, for now, having in principle agreed to sign Neymar — who was wanted by Chelsea – from the Brazilian club Santos in January. City have also yet to decide whether to sell, or possibly loan, winger Adam Johnson, who appears to have fallen out of favour with manager Roberto Mancini.
Chelsea made an inquiry over Johnson’s availability earlier this summer but that interest has been put on hold as new manager Andre Villas-Boas assesses his options, especially as he has little room for manoeuvre in his squad without moving on some senior players.
Villas-Boas said that he felt City’s transfer dealings meant it was “pretty clear” they were genuine title contenders.
“They are building a squad to threaten for the title,” he said. “They are making good signings and they can threaten for the league as well. Agüero will do well, I think.”

Got to be bollox.

If we are to do a deal with Inter over Tevez then Sneijder is clearly the one we should be after.

Maybe so. But then I like the idea of a fourth striker. When Bobby was talking about Guidetti he said he could be our '4th.....or 5th striker'.

Interesting that now Bobby has said he is going to get a midfielder and a winger none of the press anywhere have the faintest clue and must be going into meltdown. The only giveaway we have had is persistent AJ-on-loan rumours.

Although eto'o is a great player, to value him equally with tevez is unrealistic bearing in mind that tevez is only 27 and in the peak years of his career and eto'o is 30 with his best days probably behind him. If we were to do a swap deal I would want £10m as well. However, the way eto'o effectively stuck up two fingers at us a couple of years ago still rankles and I feel he would only be joining us for one last pay day to which I would say 'fuck off eto'o.'

I agree with cityger in that the swap deal we should be trying for is sneijder for tevez

I really don't think we need another striker even if Tevez goes. What we need is someone like Sneijder. Besides why would be swap a 27 year for a 30 year old?

Bob seems to like Scapuzzi, I think he was talking about Guidetti being compared to him when he said 4th or 5th. Since they're both in the squad for Dublin hopefully we will get to see who the hell he is 'cause I'm clueless.

In what fucking universe is eto worth 50million?

He is 30 for fucks sake and the deluded fuckhead would probably want wages in the same region as tevez. He is just an older, slower, less skillful balotelli.

Sneijder + eto then maybe we would be getting near 50 million's worth but i dont want eto.

Unless someone comes in with 50 million cash we need to keep tevez until january then in january when no one meets the value again keep him until next summer.

that would be a terrible swap, tevez for sneijder only.

Craig bellamy would make a great 4th choice striker, just saying......

It's just not feasible to have Eto'o, Dzeko, Balo and Aguero in the same squad. Bobby would struggle to give them enough game time, especially with Silva and another attacking mid and winger on the way.

Our fourth striker needs to be a young lad who won't grow impatient at a lack of game time.

The article is pure speculation, I'd be amazed if we're interested in Eto'o.

Surprised to hear some of the reaction to Eto'o here, the guy is the very definition of world class. A 2 in 3 scoring record at Barca and a 1 in 2 at Inter while mostly as a wing forward. An infinitely better player than Tevez and I would start to seriously consider City for the premiership and even the Champions League with a winner like him there. Would personally snap Inters hand off at the prospect of a straight swap for an inferior player who doesn't want to be there to begin with. Age is hardly even a factor since Tevez plans to retire early, they've both likely got the same number of years left in them.

People talk about him as a 4th striker but Eto'o can play deeper wide midfield role exceedingly well. You could feasibly play Eto'o in Silva's role for example.

I think most people do appreciate his qualities, I just don't think there is a place for him in the squad unless Dzeko or Balo leaves.

I'd take him today if we could shift Balo on without losing too much on the deal.

Imo, Eto'o could do a job but the idea he's as good now as he was at Barca is bollox. He's getting older & it shows.

I agree. He's talented but aging and that much star power would do more damage than good I think.
It's not all about getting the most expensive players, you also need a great supporting cast. I think the 3
"big name" strikers we have now (plus Tevez) are enough wages up front. We need a supporting cast; winger, midfielder, and younger striker up front.

Heard something today that Bellamy could feature this year if he mends things with Mancini, dont see it happening though.
Would be interesting however.

Also, on SSN:

Roberto Mancini has again played down reports that Carlos Tevez could join Inter Milan as part of a swap deal involving Samuel Eto'o and insists the striker could stay at Manchester City.

Tevez had appeared set to leave City earlier in the transfer window after asking to be allowed to move on, however, a switch to Brazilian side Corinthians fell through.

Inter have since been mooted as the European club most likely to sign Tevez, with City rumoured to want £50million for the Argentina international.

There have been suggestions that Eto'o could join City in part exchange to help facilitate Tevez's switch to Italy, but Mancini has cooled those rumours.

Mancini is waiting for Tevez to return to City following his holiday and is keeping an open mind regarding whether he can pair the forward with his compatriot, and new signing, Sergio Aguero.
"Tevez is our player and I am happy with him," said Mancini after the City boss saw his side beat an Airtricity XI in the Dublin Cup.

"Eto'o is a fantastic player, but he plays for Inter Milan. It's not true (about a swap deal).

"Tevez will return on 4th August. It depends on how he arrives, if he's in good form. He has a programme of training.

"He can play in this team, he can play in the Champions League.

"There's a chance he might go, but then there's a chance he might stay here with us now and, if so, we are happy."

I have to agree with ashton287 he is dead on with that assessment. No way is eto'o better than tevez at the mo, eto'o 2 or 3 years ago then maybe you would have a point but not now, with his age being a factor as well

Tevez for Eto'o and writing off the rest of the Balotelli money would be a good deal for both sides.

I doubt our board would deal with eto'o again though after what happened 2 years ago. He was in and out more times than the hokie cokey.

Eto'o is tailor made for the Premiership, as is Tevez
