Well I reckon depriving those cowardly Italian knife wielding merchants of my income makes sense. I realise getting stabbed is not mandatory but they should reap what they sow and just be left looking like twats.

Also what sets them apart from hoolies in other countries is that they aren't looking for "tasty lads who are up for it" but always seem to attack some random supporters ie "scarfers".

I wouldn't go as fas as saying I wouldn't go to watch football in Italy but I'd def leave family home. Also, people have to remember Naples is absolute fucking shithole of a city and pickpocketing will be rife.

Not to discount the shittyness of the city or it's inhabitants. But look at the times of the attacks. 2am, 4am. You are asking for trouble in any city on the planet that late. Just sayin'.

Not true in the slightest. As NQDP said, Italians target normal fans, act in groups of 2 or 3, and stab from behind, so you've got no realisation that there may be trouble up ahead. Belgrade and Istanbul (two places famed for football trouble, where I've been able to avoid it with ease) much safer in my opinion.

Also, it's Naples, probably the roughest city in the European Union.

Got to disagree. They were in some town centre Piazza as well. If you keep your wits about, I'd say city centre areas during mid-week in 99% of European cities are perfectly safe. If you go looking for trouble, you'll find trouble anywhere but I have hard time believing middle aged man from Hetfordshire travelling with his two sons and friend of a son were looking for trouble.

I saw Napoli in Utrecht's group in last season's Europa League and can't say that I was overly impressed. They managed to squeeze through three points behind a (then) very mediocre Liverpool with Steua and Utrecht trailing them only one respectively two points behind.

Also remember that Southern European cities are much more '24 hour' than Northern ones- it's not unusual for people to not head out to the pub until midnight in some places.

Am I right in thinking that in Italy it's only a minor offence if you stab/slash someone below the waist? So that's why you hear of fans being stabbed/slashed in the legs/arse?

Sure I've heard that somewhere before. Although it's been a long day so I could quite easily be making it up! :-)

Now you mention it, I think I've heard that before, too. Also, they aim for the buttocks so you can't sit down, as it opens up the wound.

I think that might be the case in Turkey but am not sure.

I know both a Roma and an Inter ultras ( not through football ) and both of them talk about away trips to Napoli as the worst experience ever , one of the warm welcomes Napoli fans give them is to throw bags of urine and faeces , they both say its not safe to travel if your not in groups as Napoli fans are well known for going round in large groups looking for away fans that they vastly outnumber to attack . Maybe some of this is exagerated as there is a huge culturual divide between the north and the south however the stories they tell dont make away trips to Napoli seem fun .
