This shows how misleading stats can be, as just a few weeks ago Kevin Davies had one of the best pass completions for a striker. Perhaps he still does or will again by next month ?

These are stats for Yaya & Barry in the Bolton game. Notice how Yaya's excellent pass rate is evident compared to Barry yet most of Barry's misplaced passes are attempts at attacking, in the final 3rd. And also note how Barry is better at everything else on the day. Apart from shots (shots aren't in there for some reason). I recon that as a defensive mid, Barry's stats will be better than Yaya's in every single game, often by a bigger margin. If Yaya is played further forward his attacking stats will improve but as a DM people will use the passing stat to beat Barry over the head with, as that's the one we tend to get fed in the media. As a defensive mid; Yaya isn't fit to lace Barry's boots. As a footballer; he's better.

Those who did probably don't understand that small sample sized tend to fluctuate more than bigger sample sizes. In other words, if you one good game in three, it'll have a large impact on your stats. One good game in ten wont be as noticable. The chance for his stats to dramatically surge upwards again will decline the more games he plays, unless he actually starts performing well on a regular basis, in which case the stats aren't misleading. But you probably understand that. Great.

I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

just over half of Yaya's pass attempts are forward (282 of 546 - 51.6%), pretty much even between square (134 of 546 - 24.5%) and backward (130 of 546 - 23.8%) for the rest.

Just under a quarter are what you would classify as short passes (119 of 546 - 21.7%)

Current pass success rate is 91.2% which is pretty good no matter how many are backward and sideways, especially since he's averaging nearly 80 pass attempts a match.

Those stats aren't a percentage, so he may. as you probably understand, still have one of the best pass completion rates for a striker, as those stats don't tell us how many passes he has made in total. Hence my point on how they could be misleading.

Yaya is better than Barry at everything.
Statistics when used to support evaluation is one of the best tools one can use.
They can be misleading when used in the wrong context.

Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

The only stat I give a toss about in each match is the goals stat, everything else you can interpret whichever way you want.

The problem you have when quoting stats, is that you have absolutely no idea how to interpret them & only quote the ones which you think help your point of view, leaving out the context and circumstances. You completely ignore any stats which don't agree with your point of view, as you are doing with Barry.

In the hands of people like yourself, stats are a complete waste of time. You use them like a politician on a party political broadcast.

It would seem by the fact that someone draggig up the thread what Yaya does,or slagging him of in match threads, he would have had to put in some flawless performances in the games when his unfitness and laziness was not evident to lift his stats upto what they are.
Or maybe he was not bad and he has been a bit better than average generally hence his stat numbers are what they are.

Oops My bad. In My defense it is such a worthless piece of information without context, as you point out, that i just assumed noone would tout it around. but still, My mistake.

Alternatively, and more to the point, as a DM shouldn't people be using the tackling stat to beat Yaya over the head with.
