There's absolutely no doubt at all that Messi is a wonderful player; a genius, and the greatest player of a generation by far. But, like others, I am loathe to place him in the same company as Pele, Maradona, Best, Cruyff etc. They had to contend with a heavier ball, shite pitches, poor training regimes (by today's standards) AND tackling which would draw many red cards in today's game.

The best we can do is to fully appreciate Messi's greatness in the game he graces NOW - while recalling greats of the past but realising that they were playing, essentially, a different game.

The counter argument is Messi is up against unbelievable athletes from all over the world(places that didnt produce footballers back then) who have the best nutrition fitness build etc etc yet still makes them look like schoolboys...

He seems to have very little else to his game, though, judging from that video. Didn't see him track back once.

Most of the players Best played against were part time alcoholics and probably had a roast every night! Even someone as potentially portly as Richard Dunne is still probably ten times the athlete that most were back then.

Messi is up there with Pele and Maradona. Impossible to compare, I know, but he is. You can just tell.

Noticed Tranny has scored 100 in 105 games for Real which is almost as good as our strikers!
