Poppies on the shirt

Postby ross.mcfc » Wed Nov 09, 2011 7:07 pm

England have always played in November and have never made any fuss about not wearing a poppy.

Why is this such a big deal now?

Seems odd that your first post in weeks concerns the England national team.

Played a few years ago on the 11th. Don't remember it myself but it was mentioned today. But that was before it was 'traditional' to have a poppy on the shirt

It's not often I agree with FIFA but on this occasion (and I always promote rememberence Sunday) I think they've got it right ...

So do I. Rules are rules and you set a dangerous precedent once you start making exceptions to rules, no matter how compelling or emotive the request.

I think the whole thing actually cheapens Remembrance Sunday, which is more dignified when observed at the individual's discretion. (That said, I bet the brouhaha has helped raise a few quid.)

Exception to the rule has always existed when "Rules" are used to enforce an event.. that's why they call it "exception to the rule".
THEY SAY SWEARING IS DUE TO A LIMITED VOCABULARY. I KNOW THOUSANDS OF WORDS, BUT I STILL PREFER "FUCK OFF" TO "GO AWAY"

I don't know whether they are right or not, but the way Alan Brazil is going on about it you'd think FIFA just kicked his puppy.

I don't think you need a bloody poppy to give thought or respect to those who fought for their country, nor do I actually believe you need a day either. However, I have been to the dawn service on Anzac day for as long as I can remember, if the footballers and Alan Brazil are so upset over a poppy, maybe they should do something similar.

But Fifa do have a rule on this - something along the lines of 'no added logos or symbols on international shirts' (someone else will find it in full). The rule is there in black-and-white.

It's been overturned now in any case.

We need to make a stand on this.

I think David Beckham should go into Sepp Blatter's office, dressed as a poppy & blow himself up.

The FA are one of four FA's who set the rules and have never seen fit to change it.

The same Alan Brazil who has more than one occasion made references to the IRA not being a bad bunch? The same Alan Brazil who supports Celtic who could not to do more to distance themselves from anything to do with the British army.

Spot on about Alan Brazil, complete buffoon.

I also think Ted's suggestion with Beckham merits consideration.

Carl posted a similar thread in the Ask the Lads section (about why we don't have a poppy in our banner like previous years).
My answer there:
Seems harsh [FIFA's decision], but I do somewhat understand it. If you make concessions to one country, pressure will be on if another country also wants to make an exception.
Cameron claims that wearing it it's not a political act since "'This is not an issue of left or right or Labour or Conservative." He misses the point of international politics, though.

Of course you also have the issue of branding, commercial rights, etc. As doctor doctor said above: It sets a dangerous precedent.

Well the poppies are allowed on the black ARM band, not the actual shirt. So in this case, its a compromise rather than an exception to the rule.
