I am quite sure I've heard most teams with 'City' on their name being called the citizens by commentators, like Stoke City or Birmingham City.

This has made me think that the nickname has evolved into something that is generaly used for teams with City in them in England, can anyone native to Britain confirm/unconfirm this?

Personally though, I think it's a name that has been imposed on us, and was probably invented by the media. I don't see why any fan would have used the term "Citizens" when they could just say "City".

Its just something you never really hear any more is all (bad drills by OP for not knowing), i heard some fella say shape yourselves city last year, not heard that for years

Yeah, I can't think of a single occasion in my life where I've heard a City fan refer to us as "the Citizens".

Manchester United – The Red Devils

A few conflicting stories describe the Red Devils nickname. One rumor suggests that during a tour of France in the 1960s the club were branded the Red Devils due to their red kit and Sir Matt Busby liked the name so much he asked for the club to incorporate a devil in the badge. Another story suggests it stems from local rugby Salford. The rugby club were nicknamed the Red Devils and with United formally training in Salford the nickname transferred over.

Tour of France/Red kit/named transferred over...........what a load of fuckin bollocks.
They had/have nothing to do with Red Devils - they fuckin nicked it
Salford Rugby League Club toured France in the 30's and the French were so in awe of their play, they gave them the nickname "Les Diables Rouge" - 'The Red Devils'

In fairness to OP its not a term you hear often from city fans and not a nickname id use for us infact i hate it. Its used on alot of non-Uk coverage of our games and always makes me shudder!

I don't mind Citizens. Makes a change from City and Blues all the time. Mind you, I think it looks better written down than said.

I agree with this. In the 20 years I've been going to City I don't know any City fans who use this term. I only ever saw it used in things like 'Shoot Magazine' or the 'Premier League Sticker Album'. Since I moved abroad last year, I've noticed the commentators on non-UK broadcasts use it a lot more, but let's be honest, it's not a term the average City fan uses.

The French must all be closet City fans; they've been singing about us for generations i.e "Aux armes citoyens, formez vos bataillions......", in their own National Anthem.

I know mate. Although it does seem today that despite our nickname being the 'Citizens', we don't actually use it ourselves!!!
