Man City out to create future stars at their Etihad Campus

Manchester City want to produce more home-grown talent like Micah Richards
When Barcelona defeated Manchester United in the Champions League final in May 2011, they had seven Spaniards in their starting XI, with four more on the bench and a Spanish manager. In all, eight players developed from their own academy, La Masia, played in the match.
Now, Manchester City are hoping to replicate the European champions by using home-grown players to help win the Champions League and dominate European football.
Since that final, Barcelona have added to their ranks by re-signing £24m Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal. City, meanwhile, have nine Englishmen in their squad, although only Micah Richards and Nedum Onuoha have progressed from the youth team.
But the club are digging for victory as work continues to level and decontaminate land on the 80-acre campus that will house their new academy.
The plan to house all of Manchester City's training, playing and administration facilities on one campus was launched in September when a request for planning permission was submitted to Manchester City Council.
Now, as the complex waits to be given the final go-ahead, work is under way to remove over 1.5m tonnes in contaminated land from the site - a legacy from Manchester's industrial past.
The Etihad Campus will cater for up to 400 young players when completed, 40 of whom will be accommodated and schooled on-site. It will also house a 7,000-seater stadium so youth teams can gain valuable experience of playing in front of large crowds.
The aim in east Manchester is that turning the industrial wasteland into a state-of-the-art training campus will help the club to one day replicate Barcelona.
Patrick Vieira, now retired from his playing days with France, Arsenal, Inter Milan and City themselves, is marshalling City's young prospects into the next generation of heroes. He agrees the Catalan club should serve as an "inspiration".
He said: "We don't say we should play like Barcelona but they are a fantastic example to follow. We have to be inspired by the work they've done.
"The way they won the Champions League final [with players developed in their academy] is a fantastic example to follow - but then they've been working like that for 30 years."
City's chief football operations officer Brian Marwood has been instrumental in getting the campus project off the ground, along with former chief executive Garry Cook.
He agrees that Spain, and Barcelona in particular, set the standard when the club researched what their own offering should look like.
"When you look at the Spanish teams, at all ages, they are clearly doing things right," said Marwood.
"It was clearly right that we should go and look at Barcelona. They were brilliant as a club. They weren't defensive in any way. They allowed us to come in and take a look at the philosophy and culture they've developed over a number of years there."
Marwood, who had a long career in the top tier of English football with Arsenal and both Sheffield clubs, is guided by personal experience when it comes to dealing with young players who see their dreams of playing at a professional level disappear.
He said: "My own son was in the [football development] system and came out at the age of 19 very disappointed and disillusioned. He fell out of love with football.
"Part of the ethos we're trying to create here is that, if the young players don't become footballers, we can help create another career for them.
"We're here to develop football players but, if we develop the right sort of people - if they have an involvement with this football club from the age of eight or nine, there's no reason why we can't be developing the next groundsman, or commercial director, or marketing director or the next chief football operations officer."
But Marwood has words of warning for players who do end up making it to the professional ranks with City.
With Carlos Tevez in self-imposed exile in Buenos Aires, it's clear City are determined to impose a philosophy of professionalism.
While not commenting directly on Tevez, Marwood is of the belief that the academy can help change the public's negative perception of football players.
He added: "It disappoints me greatly when you see the attitude and behaviour of certain players. I think what we're trying to do here is create a better footballer but also a better person."
Sheikh Mansour, City's UAE-based billionaire owner, is, according to Marwood, "in touch daily" through his advisors to learn and have his say on the campus project and other business matters.
Mansour must be assured that, with Marwood and Vieira at the helm, the club has in place two professionals who understand the high standards and winning philosophy he reportedly demands.
With the advent of Uefa's financial fair play rules, which seek to neuter the kind of limitless spending power that City have enjoyed in recent years, the academy has now adopted a new level of importance.
"With financial fair play, it's not going to be so easy to go around and buy young players for £30m, £40m or £50m," said Vieira. "This academy is our chance to develop those players for ourselves."

Carlos Tevez out of Roberto Mancini's Man City plans
Roberto Mancini has reiterated his view that striker Carlos Tevez is unlikely to play for Manchester City again.
The Argentine failed to report for training this month, with the club telling their lawyers to take action.
Speaking for the first time since he flew home without permission, Mancini indicated Tevez's City career is over.
Asked if he could play for the club again, the manager replied: "I don't think so. I know he is in Argentina. I don't know what he is doing."
The City boss appeared to offer Tevez a route back to the club earlier this month, when he told an Italian newspaper: "Everything depends on Carlos.
"If he apologises to the squad and to me then everything will be as before."
However, relations between the coach and his player have again soured.
Tevez was photographed returning to his native Argentina last week, when the club expected him to report for training in Manchester during the international break.
The 27-year-old, who was City's club captain last season, had not been granted leave by his employers.
It was the latest twist in an ongoing saga between Tevez and the club.
The player asked for a move away from the Premier League last December, stating he wanted to be closer to his family.
Then, in September, Mancini alleged that Tevez refused to come off the substitutes' bench in a Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich, while the striker maintained there had been a misunderstanding.
An internal club investigation concluded that Tevez was guilty of five breaches of his contract and the player was fined two weeks' wages.

Inter skipper hints at move for Tevez
Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti has hinted the club will try to sign his fellow Argentine Carlos Tevez from Manchester City in the winter transfer window.
“In January, some big players will come,” said Zanetti. “The club is working towards January, and they have always offered support when we needed it.
“He (Tevez) is having problems with his club, but he is a great player.” Mirror

Milner hails Manchester City’s spirit
Manchester City midfielder James Milner has stated that the team spirit at the club is excellent, and this could be a key reason for the side’s success.
The Etihad Stadium outfit sit on top of the Premier League, are unbeaten and five points clear of cross-town rivals Manchester United.
Despite a number of controversial players causing problems in the past, Milner has hailed the squad’s togetherness.
“We’ve a good bunch of lads and there’s always banter going on. We enjoy ourselves,” he told Mirror Football.
“That’s important – the spirit – because when things aren’t going well on or off the field, you need to pull together for that last-minute winner or to grind out a result if you’re down to 10 men.
“That’s when wanting to run that extra five yards for your team-mate comes into it,” he stated.
Despite an influx of high profile foreign players, Milner feels that the English core to the side could be the recipe for success.
“Look down the squad list, it’s full of top players.
“We’ve a good core of English players, which you need, just as you need a core of Italian players in Italy, say, but we’ve got good foreign players as well.
“We want to win and it’s exciting times here. We won’t get ahead of ourselves, but we all want to create history for this club and to win trophies.
“I’m here to win the medals I can look back on when my career is over. I hope the FA Cup is just the first of many.
“It was great for our fans – sharing a city with a club that’s done so well over the years has been tough on them. Now it’s down to us to get on a par.
“They [Manchester United] have set those standards and we have to match them,” he concluded.

Manchester City save Ardwick boxing club from a knockout blow

When the roof collapsed at Ardwick Boxing Club it looked like a knockout blow had landed on the historic stable.

But thanks to the generosity of kind-hearted bosses at Manchester City, the 114-year-old institution is about to drag itself from the canvas and roar back into life.

Coach Ian Harrison had feared the worst when lead thieves prompted the collapse at their already-dilapidated gym on Palmerston Street.

It had only just been given the green light to reopen after flooding wreaked havoc last winter.

With no money to pay for a new home he was faced with delivering the heartbreaking news to 20 young fighters that they would have to find somewhere else to train.

But City chiefs heard of the club's plight and leapt into action - finding them a new home at a former church on Bosworth Street in the shadows of their own stadium.

And their generosity did not end there. They made the boxing club the first winners of the new Connell Awards, named after the family that founded City and aimed at helping sports clubs in east Manchester, and handed them a cheque for new gear.

Blues staff were also drafted in to spend a day working at the new site and club sponsors were called upon to donate equipment.

As though that was not enough 52-year-old Ian, and ardent United fan, says Blues officials have promised they can move to the club's new planned world-leading training facility when it opens.

He said: "In June the roof fell in and hurt one of the cleaners and they closed the place down.

"I was ferrying the lads to a friend's gym in Droylsden but it wasn't looking good.

"Then City stepped in and they have helped us no end. They gave us the first Connell Award, found this place and brought in staff, painters and builders to help.

"We've got Buckinghams contractors putting some showers in at the moment and we hope to be open before the end of the month. We are hoping to hold an open day in December and get Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton here.

"Already we have been inundated with calls from kids asking us when we are opening.

"We are going to be here rent free for the next three years and then City have said we can move to their new training complex.

"They have been brilliant."

Despite a big helping hand from the Blues Ian says he is not changing his football allegiances.

He joked: "When I went down to pick up the award I met Noel Gallagher and Patrick Vieira and they were calling me a dirty Red. But I'm not changing – especially after what happened in the derby."
