dzeko off for aguero at half time when it was clear he wasnt in the game.

at the end of the day this is our 1st year in the champions league......how many teams go on to win it in the 1st season ? i certainly didnt expect us to. maybe a slightly easier group we would have been ok but who knows.

Not giving De Jong enough game time to get up to speed for this one was probably critical: Ya Ya just couldn't pick up the slack and because of Napoli's disciplined defending his power surges just doesn't have the same impact as against porous EPL defences and an understrength Villareal
Dzeko useless: he needed to have been replaced a lot earlier; it might have been a hangover from Bosnia's failed Euro play-off, but he's done absolutely nothing in Europe, this season.

You're right - you probably will be on your own. The Europa is now a rubbish competition - goes on forever, devalued by CL rejects joining in etc. pity as the old UEFA cup was a better competition than the European Cup due to the strength of the teams in it but they're all now in the CL.

I'd prefer to be out of the Europa ASAP, partly to avoid having to go to a load of games I'm not interested in

There are various selection things that can be argued after the event but when Platt was interviewed at half time, he stressed the importance of not giving the ball away in the middle & how they had talked about it. We kicked off & Yaya Toure could not have done a better job of giving the ball away in the middle if he had been hired to do so; he was fucking pathetic.

It set the tone for a build up of pressure & their goal resulted from it. I made the point in the thread about him that when he plays the withdrawn role he is unreliable. Against Bayern he failed to track players going into our box & he did the same today; players were left to take up positions inside our penalty area whilst he stood in open space, eventually they scored from such an area. A quality defensive midfielder would have piled in & stopped Cavani from getting a shot in. Yaya could have done so without breaking sweat but didn't. It's no use saying "oh so & so should be there" " it's not my job" etc move your fucking arse, bail out the defence & then shout about it. He has been a weak link in that position & a strong point when played further forward. I never wat to see him in that role again v a decent side.

Kolarov btw has proved today that he's not good enough to play fullback at the top level but I think at least half of us already knew that.

I don't mind losing games if we do our best but imo both v Napoli & Bayern, we have played at a level which would lose us most PL away games. We are dodgy at the back & lack the same threat up front; it is not the same team. That team we saw tonight would not get top 4 in the Prem; no chance.

Your not on your own. We should treat it as seriously as the CL and try to win all the games - without jeopardising the Prem.
One decent reason alone is that the squad need to learn and they need to cope with 2 games a week and they need the challenges of decent teams playing different types of football and dealing with rotating the squad. Oh and they should be trying to win everything they are in too.
Bottom line is there is a lot to learn.

In what way does it go on forever? It's long if you are in from the start including qualifying but for City it will be a straight knock out won't it.No doubt we will field a largely second string side even if we do try to win it as we should.

Exactly, 9 games to win the Europa League (if I'm right in thinking the quarters and semis are two-leg affairs). The League should be the priority without a doubt, but we should still give the EL the same level of attention as we have (or ironically haven't) the CL.

Where did I say I thought we should have won the CL? What I said was that UEFA has ruined the UEFA cup, especially. Ow with the ridiculous group stages. No one cares who wins it apart from the two teams in the final. It's worth virtually nothing financially or in terms of prestige.

I was annoyed last season that we didn't take the Carling Cup more seriously but I really couldn't care less about the Europa. On top of that, the long trips and numerous games will have a toll on our PL campaign. Play the kids and see how they do, but I wouldn't want to see any of the first 16 anywhere near it
