A nice visit to Atletico Madrid or Lisbon would do very nicely.

I think it would be great to win this. Lets face it, the trophy room would look a bit odd in a few years with everything else in it and a empty space for this. Plus, we don't want to be trying to win this in a couple more years, because that will mean we've gone backwards. Right now is the perfect time as long as its doesn't fuck up our premier league plans.

The Europa League has always been much better for away visits.

B team all the way to the semi's if they get that far for me though.

It is a decent list of teams left but how many of them will be putting 100% into this tournament? If you look at the list of winners of the last few years, it is always won by a team which it really means something too. Fulham/Rangers/Celtic fans all of whom lost in the final still fetishize about their run in the Europa cup. I doubt our squad or any of us will be going to bed dreaming of Europa cup glory.

My understanding is that from this point its the same amount of games as it would be to win the CL. Its the earlier stages that are a joke in terms of number of games. Therefore I think we should give it a go to be honest, we were happy to play twice a week when we were in the CL so we might as well do it in the Europa League too as far as i'm concerned, its a trophy, lets go and win it!

Nope- an extra 2 games. We've gone into Round of 32, as opposed to Round of 16 for CL.

Plus I've got a feeling the final is before the end of the domestic season.

Our last couple of Europa excursions were to see how far we can get, with an optimistic view of winning the whole thing. This time we have the quality in depth to take on anyone we are drawn against. Definately try and get this one in the cabinet this year and get extra confidence out of the journey for the CL next year.

You might need your furry snow boots in Madrid in February mate. Mind you there are some chilly and grim places on the list (like Stoke).

Anyone know the rules on playing clubs from the same country, can that happen anytime now?

Tuesday option for Europa ties

Manchester United or Manchester City face the possibility of being moved to a late Tuesday afternoon slot for their Europa League campaign.

Games in the competition are usually held on a Thursday night but the fact that United and City both dropped out of the Champions League on Wednesday has created a problem for UEFA.

UEFA have confirmed that both United and City will be seeded for the last 32 of the Europa League, meaning under normal circumstances they would both play their home games in the second leg.

However, competition regulations prevent any teams within a 31-mile radius of each other playing on the same day.

Effectively, this means either United or City will have to move from Thursday night or have their fixture reversed, thus losing the perceived advantage of a home second leg.

The complication over kick-offs arises because UEFA are reluctant to sanction any non-Champions League game for the same time as matches in their number one club competition.

As two last-16 first-leg ties will be scheduled for both Tuesday, 21st February and Wednesday 22nd in the week when those Europa League second-leg encounters are scheduled, it means any switched game would probably have to take place earlier in the evening even if the Premier League's remaining two representatives, Arsenal and Chelsea, were not in action.

It is the same fate that befell Everton two years ago when they had a clash with Liverpool and were eventually ordered to play Sporting Lisbon on the Tuesday, with a 5.45pm kick-off.

However, as that was a first-leg game and both City and United should be playing second-leg matches, with the potential for extra-time and penalties, UEFA may demand an earlier start time to preserve the Champions League's exclusivity.

At the time, Toffees manager David Moyes complained there was no scope for merely switching the fixture round, although this is one of the options open to the competitions' committee when it makes its final decision ahead of next Friday's draw.

UEFA have also confirmed that clubs from the same country will be able to meet in the last 16, raising the prospect of both Manchester sides being drawn together, as they have been in the FA Cup third round.

Stoke and Fulham, who seem set to progress through the more conventional route, will also note the possibility of inflicting additional misery on a big-name Premier League foe who suddenly find themselves scrambling about with Europe's lesser lights.

The precise list of clubs United and City could be paired with will not be known until the final round of Europa League group matches are concluded next Wednesday and Thursday.

I think the next draw is when they do 2 rounds to keep it in line with the CL ie draw the last 16 for both after doing the last 32 for Europa. We should therefore know who we'll get if we get through the next round.

Fingers crossed for 2 short trips and easy ties. I'd be happy with Stoke or Fulham in the last 16 to avoid a long trip to the edge of nowhere.
