When Did You Join?

Postby Beefymcfc » Sat Dec 10, 2011 11:37 pm

Just looking at BS76's username it got me thinking. I started going to the games during a period when we didn't win anything, and didn't until the glory of last year, yet BS76 joined the club during a period where we actually won something (this is nothing about BS76 by the way).

So, as the title says, when did you start following the club that you love and what have you thought ever since?

Assume this means me - fame at last.

User name comes from my first City memory - being taken to town to watch the open top bus following the 76 win. I was only 4 and probably thought that was what what football was all about. I've found ticket stubs from the '77 season but I don't really remember any games from then and always wonder about those people who did the 'my first city game' stuff, as I can barely remember the Norwich game, let alone one from years ago.

Well I would say I've supported City since I was born but that would be stupid since I didn't know what football was when I was born. I've followed City since I was 6 so from 1993. Its crazy to see the club I love riding so high, I never ever thought we would be one of the top clubs around and have such a top class squad.

I know my dad took me as a whipper snapper when I was about 4 (in '75) and various times afterwards. The first game I actually remember was a home game against the Toon where I ran around picking money up that they threw at us (top left corner of the Kippax as if you were stood in it). I also remember going away to the likes of Ipswich and Forest (chicken wire at Ipswich and coaches windows got smashed in at Forest) and this was the time it all became clear that City was in my blood.

There's so many people who have a different story, it could be because they hated the Rags, liked the colour, won a cup, or like John 68, we were massive in the 1800's. Just wondered when and why?

Do you think it was the Premier League that grabbed you, afterall, it's grabbed many since?

No, definitely not the Premier League. My Dad is a massive City fan and has been throughout his entire life so I guess it was embedded in me. But, as time went on and I grew a love for the club independently and it wouldn't have mattered what league the club was in and still doesn't from here on out, I'll always be a City fan.

I first became interested in football in 1975. I didn't have any external influences as my Dad was a Salford RL supporter and took me to the Willows on a regular basis. Colourwise I always preferred blue to red so decided that City were my team 1st game I went to was April 13th 1977 2-1 win home to Leeds. Didn't really go regularly until about 1986. Then went home and away for a number of years. Nowadays I watch via the net. CTID
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.

My first ever City game was in 91. Sunderland away at the old Roker park. Finished 1-1 but will be remembered as Howard Kendals last game in charge of City.

My first trip to Maine Road was in 1993. We lost 1-0 to Arsenal. An Ian Right goal if I remember correctly.

I think I went to three home games before we actually won a game. 3-0 against Villa. A Peter Beagrie wonder goal and an Uwe Rosler double if I remember correctly.

My grandad decided that for me when I was born. My first memory was reading shoot magazine with John Bond on the cover sitting on his lap. He used to tell me about getting in for free after half time.

Was going in the late 80's as a boy but like blue since 76 cannot remember specific games.

I remember the atmosphere, the bananas and being in a crowd that seemed like all of England was there.

Fell off the radar a bit in mid 90's as Australia weren't showing lower tiers back then (moved in 91)

Getting pay tv in 2001 was a god send as I got to see them here and there, plus results.

Foxtel going with every prem game live a few years back is amazing. Never miss a minute now.

i had been new to premier league football back in 2006 when i arrived to this country. i made my decision instantly - man city and no other. very similar history with my local club - long tradition but no real success. my first ever game at coms was 0-1 with chelsea, got my first scarf and t-shirt (it's too tight now lol) and got shocked by owerwhelming silence but i presumed it's pretty much all the same in other grounds comparing to organised vocal support and ultras movement in poland (not to mention hool's). but i've seen some great games, including that home chelsea match in 2006/2007 when we were dire overall (10 goals scored at home lol, funny isn't it?). fuck it, i'm enjoying the ride but it's like fantasy football stuff :D

I am actually a kind of convert, though wasn't overy interested in footie since I was unable to play but went along to the games with my Dad. My first away game was 7 November 1987 (City played at home that day, and jesus did they PLAY!). I was in the away end doing the conga with the Town fans, I was blown away by what I saw. Luckily for me two older lads in my village followed City and took me to most home games for a lot of years :-). The memorable players for me as a young un were Lakey, Stewart & Whitey!
I haven't a fecking clue what I'm doing! Gillie come back man I want my sig back. As the Photobucket thingy gone?

1968 title-winning season. Cant remember the exact moment (no family connection) but I remember celebrating the title like mad, so I dont think I'm a glory-hunter!

I think that, being an awkward bugger, I got fed up with all those other kids at my Oldham infant school rabbiting on about United. Never did like red. Anyone my age remember the good old infantile ditty (to the tune of Jesus Christ Superstar)?:

In my case it isn't that stupid - my relationship with city started in the womb as I was due to be born around the time of the 1956 final (the famous Bert Trautmann one). My dad was forced to give up his ticket but in the end I was several days late - he never did get to the FA Cup Final as the next time he got a ticket - Spuds '81 - he pretended to be ill so I would take it.

Dad said he took me to my first match when he had babysitting duties when I was a few months old. He also said that Don Revie scored so that would probably make it September the 8th 1956 when we beat Sunderland 3-1. Been [strike]suffering[/strike] going to watch City ever since, though not regularly until the early 60s when we were "three-quarter timers" if we couldn't sneak under the turnstile.

I started supporting City in 74' because my mother bought me a man city shirt in a local dept store. She bought it because she liked the colour and i needed a kit for school. I've never looked back - I still have the very same shirt which has a couple of autographs on it now from playesr of that era - Rodney Marsh and Dennis Law (that back heel).

The same shirt is now worn by my 3 and a half year old son on occassions, but I don't want it to get dirty because it can't go in the wash, so good old Santa Claus is going to sort something out for the lad in a couple of weeks or so.

My first game at Maine Road was at home to Arsenal a 3-0 win for City 25th April 86/87 season. I went to a good few games during the next few seasons (travelling up from Norfolk) as well as going to away games in the midlands and London. I was fortunate enough to be in the main stand when we beat Huddersfield 10-1.

A family and a mortgage nowadays means those 3 or 4 seasons when I lived with the folks and could easily spend my hard earned cash on following City are sadly a thing of the past, but my passion for City is something that will never dwindle and I meet up with a few local City fans to watch games in the pub or online.

As everyone knows It's obviously been a real rollercoaster over the last 35+ years supporting City, in a peverse way it was good to be part of supporting a club through tough times that had such a reknown, loyal and respected fan base, but fantastic to see city win a trophy after so long last season and now not having to panic when we play the ball across the back four!

To be honest I don't think i'd have chagned much over the last 37 years, apart from perhaps actually beating spurs in 81, that was tough to take for a 13 year old for whom City was everything!

I suppose I first consciously started supporting City in 1989 when I was 5, but due to road accidents and other issues that blighted my early years I didn't get to my first game until the 7th November 1992 when I was 8. We beat Leeds 4-0, I don't remember who scored particularly but I was totally hooked, for the few years after that I could only go to the odd game, but I guess from that point onwards!

My first ever game was the one with Gilligham. In 98, all the people around that talked about international football, where interested of what a great team is Scum, this and that. So my grandfather, who sadly was in his last year and who worked all his life in the romanian football press asked around and got me a shirt of the Goat. He started telling me about Mike Summerbee, King Alan, Colin and all what City meant and instatly i had fallen in love with the club.
I had a friend in those days who had a satellite dish and so i started watching City's games and after a while, my dad took me to the final on Wembley. I was out of my mind when Dickov scored.
Never looked back on that day when i had for the first time my Goater shirt and nobody knew who the hell he was. Proud to be a blue, even if we were again in Division 2.
