T'is indeed.

My company's CEO couldn't even say "Merry Christmas" in his end of year video. He felt obliged to say "So, if you if celebrate Christmas, have a great time. If not, enjoy the holidays".

As said earlier, the country is going PC mad.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011 ... s-coloured

I don't know mate, he should have been a bit more savvy as he knew the discussion would move that way, but in this day and age you could just as easily get fired for using black instead of coloured if the mood of the day caused folk to complain. Its fucking impossible to judge the mood at the time - so whilst "people of colour" used to be a pc way of describing black folk, I would probably consider that is patronising and derogatory.

Its a fucking minefield and I don't think Hansen is guilty of anything other than choosing the wrong word in the context of the discussion

Completely understand. I'm not posting this as it 'outraged' or offended, just had a slight chuckle over a misjudgment by Hansen. Find it more funny than anything

Simply being offended is quite pointless, think it's just better to laugh at the whole theater around it

I didn't realise Hansen had said this.

I fully understand the problem people have with some of these terms as the word 'coloured' was used by many people in the past to try to be inoffensive, they thought it was the term they were supposed to use, so many older people still use it because they don't know any better. Black people aren't black, so some old folks think it's an insult to call them that & don't realise the negative connotations about the word 'coloured'.

Alan Hansen is a TV presenter who recieves £40k per episode. That's forty thousand pounds for an hour's work. He knew he would have to talk about sensitive race issues in front of millions of people as part of that hour's work.

All part of the same, money for old rope, comfort zone crap.

Darren Gough has just come out with a load of sense about Liverpool & Suarez & the T shirt. I'm gobsmacked.

He keeps repeating "show some dignity".

Where did he admit to racially abusing Suarez ? All I've seen was that he insulted him in Spanish, which is technically a bannable offence (abusive langueage in general) but if we want Evra banned for that then it means we can't argue if Balotelli, Joe Hart or similar also get banned for it tonight.

i cant remember where i read that about Evra but apparently in his claims against Suarez he admitted to abusing Suarez. I'll look now.

Edit:
People will be critical of their criticism of the FA, but we are all missing a huge point here. The fact that Evra has admitted to abusing Luis Suarez and has not been charged by the FA, suggests that we are not on a level playing field here. To kick racism out of football, it has to work both ways. Patrice Evra should receive the same punishment as Luis Suarez, and until that happens the suggestions that the FA are a corrupt organisation will continue to grow and grow
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... -live.html

"A sanction like this is absurd, out of place and absolutely exaggerated. What's more, there's the story that the other sportsman (Evra) might have called Luis a 'sudaca'," he added, referring to an insulting Spanish term for South Americans.
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/21122011/ ... uarez.html

LFC: “We would also like to know when the FA intend to charge Patrice Evra with making abusive remarks to an opponent after he admitted himself in his evidence to insulting Luis Suarez in Spanish in the most objectionable of terms. Luis, to his credit, actually told the FA he had not heard the insult.”

these werent the places i read the news from but its the same story

Stop talking through your arse man, no-one said we should regress, or shouldn't progress, the problem is that no-one seems to know what's what these days. I blame all these softies changing the rules every 2 seconds then realising that they may be insulting someone else. You know, like yourself.

PS - I'm offended by this thread. The thing we've lost is the ability to discuss things in a grown up manner, rather than reactionary nonsense which is either "the PC brigade" nor racist idiots spouting off.... without being labelled one of the above.

ah bless. number 2, in so many ways.

do either of you disagree with the premise: "The thing we've lost is the ability to discuss things in a grown up manner, rather than reactionary nonsense which is either "the PC brigade" or racist idiots spouting off.... without being labelled one of the above"

or do you just speak swear?

I think you need to add a 3rd category to your list:

3. People who offer nothing to the discussion except complaining about the discussion. They can offer neither humor or insight, unlike the other categories. You notice how before your post there was at least a resemblance of a discussion. Then you came to destroy everything.

The worst part about it is that by writing this post, you've managed to drag me along with you into this category. So in conclusion, I stand by my original premise:

Dont bunch me in with him.

To answer your question, given the delicate nature of the subject matter, I think this thread has contained some decent stuff on the issue in hand.
