My company's CEO couldn't even say "Merry Christmas" in his end of year video. He felt obliged to say "So, if you if celebrate Christmas, have a great time. If not, enjoy the holidays".

This had me cracking up watching MOTD, but I wasn't sure if 'colored' had as bad a connotation in Britain as it does in the States. I guess it does and only a truly idiotic person could unflinchingly throw in a racially charged word when talking about modern racism. All you can do is laugh at the sheer stupidity. I don't know mate, he should have been a bit more savvy as he knew the discussion would move that way, but in this day and age you could just as easily get fired for using black instead of coloured if the mood of the day caused folk to complain. Its fucking impossible to judge the mood at the time - so whilst "people of colour" used to be a pc way of describing black folk, I would probably consider that is patronising and derogatory.

Its a fucking minefield and I don't think Hansen is guilty of anything other than choosing the wrong word in the context of the discussion

Completely understand. I'm not posting this as it 'outraged' or offended, just had a slight chuckle over a misjudgment by Hansen. Find it more funny than anything

I fully understand the problem people have with some of these terms as the word 'coloured' was used by many people in the past to try to be inoffensive, they thought it was the term they were supposed to use, so many older people still use it because they don't know any better. Black people aren't black, so some old folks think it's an insult to call them that & don't realise the negative connotations about the word 'coloured'.

Alan Hansen is a TV presenter who recieves £40k per episode. That's forty thousand pounds for an hour's work. He knew he would have to talk about sensitive race issues in front of millions of people as part of that hour's work.

Where did he admit to racially abusing Suarez ? All I've seen was that he insulted him in Spanish, which is technically a bannable offence (abusive langueage in general) but if we want Evra banned for that then it means we can't argue if Balotelli, Joe Hart or similar also get banned for it tonight.

i cant remember where i read that about Evra but apparently in his claims against Suarez he admitted to abusing Suarez. I'll look now.

The fact that Evra has admitted to abusing Luis Suarez and has not been charged by the FA, suggests that we are not on a level playing field here. To kick racism out of football, it has to work both ways.
