thorium reactors ... that's the next step in energy. IMO 'green' energy sources, in their current form, aren't going to be viable as main sources of energy. Until there are some major scientific breakthroughs, they will only be suitable to a back up role.

Those breakthroughs will come though, we're only toying with this stuff yet since we're still hooked on fossil fuel.

There are a few obstacles to be dealt with still, but it could very well be the way forward.

I was very concerned to hear that Paraguay has blocked all access to it's ports for Falklands-trading vessels.

The fact the Paraguay lost all it's access to the sea siding with Peru in a foolish war with Chile in the 19th century may play a part though.

Although I agree with the majority of your post, I have to pick up on this:

Mikhail Chigorin wrote:Moreover, the Argentinians will have been taking a close interest in our Government's continuing defence cuts, no doubt gleefully noting that we now have no aircraft carriers left and that the remnants of our army not being killed in Afghanistan, will be needed to police the 2012 Olympics.

As signatories to the 'Olympic Truce', a UN Resolution, it would be a political shot in the foot for the Argies if they tried anything funny during the Olympics, especially involving the host nation.

I was blissfully unaware of it until now, thank you for drawing it to my attention.

To my mind, it's a racing certainty that, at some point in the not too distant future, they're going to try a (this time successful) repeat of their 1982 South Atlantic adventure, safe in the knowledge that we no longer possess the military capacity to do anything/much about it.

We are supposed to be sharing an aircraft carrier with the French. I am sure they will let us use it as they fully supported the liberation of the three men and a sheep with excellent oil reserves last time round. Cough, cough. Oh yes, that's right they didn't!

Mikhail Chigorin wrote:
Such an action would result in political humiliation for our shambolic Coalition Government and, whilst I'm not averse to a bit of political humiliation being handed out to this inept bunch of retards

You gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside with that bit

Mikhail Chigorin wrote:
I wonder if our owners are monitoring such developments and might be considering lining up another expensive attacking purchase to add to the squad and, if necessary, replace Aguero, if ever the situation required it ??

Maybe they will just buy us an aircraft carrier? Blue68 says we can hire some but last time I was at HSS they definitely didn't have any, I'd have noticed.

Mikhail Chigorin wrote:.

My question is this; how would it affect two very important players in the squad ?? Would they stay here and continue to fight for the team, or disappear back to their own country ?? If they stayed, how would their form be affected in the hostile climate they would have to face ??....and what would be the aggravated backlash of animosity directed against City be like, simply because we continued to employ and play them ??

What happened to Ardiles and Villa last time? Obviously they were more central figures then as they had made that record with Chas N Dave and won the FA Cup single handed (and foreigners were few and far between in those days) but my recollection is that they were unable to come back afterwards? Would they even be allowed to stay as citizens of an enemy nation?

Another factor now is 24 hour news who might pick up on the fact that the Falklands are NOT off the coast of Scotland. Support this time round might therefore be less forthcoming from the public. But if work permits were removed that would not be particularly helpful...

You've made some nice, wry coments there Mr Socrates, certainly made me chuckle when I read them.

Argentina isn't taking an embargo against Brazil; it's actually formed some sort of economic 'bloc' WITH Brazil (and Paraguay and Uruguay as well) and one of the outcomes this configuration is trying to effect is an economic embargo against the Falklands.

Very droll John; nice line in irony.

However, Paraguay does have a few AIRports, which are a different matter altogether.

Argentina can go fuck itself. UN all up in the hisouse, borrow a few aircraft carriers or use more local friendly airbases and send in the marines. Have the sheikh put a word in with the queen(probably knows her) so a few of the sas lads can go pay tevez and his sick note a visit.

Also how likely is it that new forms of energy will actually take off when it will fuck off too many very very rich and therefore powerful people or will they start charging us ridiculous prices for fucking wind aswell. The new electric cars aren't exactly cheap if that's anything to go by.

Apologies for confusing Paraguay with Bolivia in the War of the Pacific. Paraguay has an even more disastrous history and is even further from the sea of course.

However the statement did mention Falklands -flagged vessels, ships etc. Maybe they could go upriver aways? :-)

They just need to reregister their fishing fleet (and future oil fleet) to somewhere like Hull - problem solved. (Or land/load from southern Chile ports, assuming Chile actually have any near the Magellan straits)

Thinking about it, I could see quite a major partnership forming with Chile and the UK.
