Law 12, page 34 states what is an offence for a direct free kick, can't see anything there what Kompany did.
Page 37 shows a list of offences that can incur a red card, he didn't break any of these, will probably be classed as serious foul play.
We can also appeal to the FA on the grounds the length of ban is unfair (similar to what the FA did to UEFA) citing we had a 1 match ban for first red card, this wasn't violent conduct, African cup of nations, severity of games missed etc. Just like the FA used to get Shrek's ban reduced.
