One possibility that occurred to me reading through this thread is that it is quite conceivable that Balotelli may get sent off for denying a defender an own goal scoring opportunity even though the defender was in an offside position.

What if an attacker took out a defender who's about to score an own goal. Is that a red card offence??
Clear denial of a goal scoring opportunity.
