Points Tally Compared to Last Season

Postby Niall Quinns Discopants » Thu Apr 12, 2012 6:13 am

We had 71 points last season and beat that tally last night (74 pts now). Interestingly rags won the title last year with only 80 points.

So clear improvement there.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

I don't want to be pedantic, but I thought it was 79 they won it with?...although I could be wrong!

If we can finish around 85 or 86 points, it may not win the silver, but its a good enough step forward for me to look at the positives. However, I'm sure we'll all look back at certain events, Fulham Sunderland away etc where we fell short.

And I am right in thinking we qualified for Champs league too last night?, along with the best goal difference and lots of other records beaten!. Ok it hasn't been the perfect last few weeks by a long shot but it really as been a great season so far!. I honestly hand on heart think we will get another 12 points :-) (at least). :-)

definite measure of improvement from last season.

Shit happens in cups, and yea it's fucking disappointing to be out of all of them ... the league is what matters and sustained success in the league is what will turn us into a top club. Otherwise we may as well just aspire to be liverpool ... great cup team. Of course our plan can be to become both, but it was never going to happen overnight. Some people need to get over themselves.

As much as I always love good pat on the back, I did check it myself.

So you disagree that we have statistically been doing better in the league than we did year before? I don't quite understand how that works. We have three more points with five games to spare and twice as good goal difference.

I don't quite understand where you are getting at with this.

I think points mean nothing in the short run purely because 71 points is normally enough to win a season but as we have seen this year competition has been poor in the PL so us and the rags have got extra points we normally probably wouldn't have got.

I agree with this, to an extent. 'Points earned' isn't a direct indication of improvement since 3 points for a win was introduced. A better pointer is 'points earned as a proportion of those earned across the League'. If less games have been drawn this season, our performance, comparatively at least, could, in theory, be worse (although I doubt that is actually the case).

Edit: after a quick calculation, only 15.9% of points have 'gone missing' through draws this season so far (156 in 328 games), whereas last season 20.3% did (232 in 380). Therefore, when taking this into account, our points are 4.4% 'inflated', so, comparatively, we should have 70.7 points at the moment...

I have no idea how you worked that out but good job lol. Also an eye opener I guess if that is true. Sure football can't come down to just stats and numbers though right? Otherwise there would be no point in opinions :-P.

Also, by my calculations, 84 (83.52 to be precise) points are needed to make this season's performance 'equivalent' to that, due to less points being lost through draws throughout the league.

i'm no mathematician, but i'm struggling to see how the # of draws by other clubs has any relevance whatsoever.

Because every time a draw happens, somewhere in the league a point is lost.

This season, there are 4.4% more points 'floating around' the league table as a whole.

Therefore, for a team's standings to be accurately compared on points accrued, and not position, this has to be taken into account.

To do this, one must multiply this season's points by 0.956, or last season's by 1.044.

Obviously, this number will change from week-to-week, as the number of draws divided by the number of games played will change.

Read the rest of the thread.

Actually, just realised what I said was a bit confusing. I was talking about the Rags' 80 points tally, and forgot to delete the first sentence.
