There seems to be a valid argument for all cases. It makes you think that whatever the ref does, someone is going to find fault.

Say in the derby a United player tries to catch a goal bound shot but then drops it in to the net so the goal is given. Surely we'd all be screaming for a red card aswell for a clear attempt at cheating?

Yeah,I think a red card would also be given. Like if a player was rounded and the defender then turns and rugby tackles the attacking player but the ball still rolls into the net, surely a red is still given. I just think the red is given after the goal is scored if it would have been a red anywhere on the field (serious foul play). We see refs playing advantage and the pulling the play back for a card all the time. The red is just given if it wasnt obviuosly intentional but stopped a clear cut goal. A pen is given and the player is sent off to still punish the side if the pen is missed. If this didnt happen, keepers would be bringing players down in clear scoring opportunities all the time.

Why would you? The red card is for denying a goal scoring opportunity - if it's a goal then you haven't denied the opportunity.
