Best player in the world is always a forward because goals win games. Simple.

Goals may win games but defense wins championships

Wrong. 38 clean sheets will win you fuck all if you don't score.

38 hatricks on the other hand......

...will lose you 38 games if you let in 4 goals each game. While 38 clean sheets would have kept you in the division

If i was to be particularly picky, i would say that 38 hattricks is incredibly unlikely to combine with 38 lots of keegan style defending, wheras 38 draws is nowhere near guaranteed to keep you up.

Exactly. A prolific striker will get you three points.

Keeper/defender separately will earn you 1.

Can't believe I'm arguing this.

I had this argument with a bunch of mates a couple of years back and I'm of the view that the hardest thing to do on a football pitch is put the ball in the back of the net.

I've heard this echoed a few times from ex pros... defenders, mids and forwards so there must be something in it!

There is no such thing as the best player, it is all on someone's perspective. The meaning of best player can be defined differently by every person

You are right. Or maybe you are wrong but don't know it yet. What in your opinion is the purpose of debate?

Then why does Mancini, Capello, Mourinho, Benitez... all look to build a strong defense before coaching their team how to attack? Why has these managers won so much while people like Keegan, Ranieri, and Hughes have won fuck all?

During a whole season, even the best strikers goes through a dry spell. The best defenses can be relied upon every game. If the other team doesn't score on you, your team always has the chance to win. If you leak goals you're always coming from behind. Hence the "champions like performance" that so many people refer to is eeking a 1-0 win away at stoke or sunderland. It's why the scum get so many 1-0 wins and why Mourinho's chelsea did the same. It's why Arsenal haven't won shit since their back like retired.

Strikers win individual games, Defense wins championships. I can't believe that yall think this is really up for debate.
