Football Writers Awards

Postby Ted Hughes » Tue Apr 24, 2012 10:31 am

http://menmedia.co.uk/manchesterevening ... ion-awards?

Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has been voted 2012 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association - with no Manchester City player in the top four. Holland striker Van Persie, 28, topped the poll of journalists with a landslide victory ahead of Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney in second place and his Old Trafford team-mate Paul Scholes third, with Fulham's Clint Dempsey fourth. Van Persie's 34 goals in all competitions has helped propel the Gunners into the top four of the Barclays Premier League, leaving them on the brink of Champions League qualification for next season. Van Persie - last week named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year - will receive the prestigious FWA accolade, which has been running since 1948, at a gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel on May 3. FWA chairman Steve Bates, chief football writer at The People, said: "Robin was the overwhelming choice of our members this season and deservedly so after a magnificent campaign for Arsenal. "The quality of his goals, attacking movement and consistency in a turbulent season for The Gunners has been eye-catching. "The considerable size of his majority in the votes cast by our members reflected the general view that he has been the season's most outstanding individual performer."

Football Writers' Player of The Year Awards

Postby freshie » Tue Apr 24, 2012 10:33 am

Robin van Persie deservedly won the Football Writers' Player of The Year award last night but how the hell did Paul Scholes make 3rd on that list?

1. Van Persie
2. Rooney
3. Scholes
4. Dempsey

Not a single City player in the top 4 yet we are 2nd in the league and on course to win our first title for 44 years yet that ginger twat is 3rd. Rag loving media dickheads

Was just about to post this. Nice to see another Rag dinosaur get a lifetime achievement acknowledgement.

He's been great since coming back, but hardly fair to give player of the season to someone who's only played 15 games or so.

So basically they are saying that all our players have been worse than Clint Dempsey this season?

What a remarkable team effort it must have been to stay in the title race with such inferior playing staff.

Correct, and pretty much as expected, surprised Giggs didn't feature though.

It was always going to happen, dont know why anyone gets stressed about it.

If i was to be objective, i would say that rooney and dempsey are there by rights. What is interesting is that it is considered that Silva has only turned up for half a season, does that make him a lesser player than scholes who has played a dozen or so games which coincided with uniteds recent run.

I'm not stressed.

And Dempsey the fourth best player in the country? Give over.

That's not what it says, is it. He's having a great season & I don't mind if a player from a smaller team gets some recognition.

But Scholes in there is a travesty & I hope his media pals choke on their ballots while City celebrate the title.

He has had a sensational season, all the more so given he plays for an unfashionable club. I have no argument at all with him being named

An absolute disgrace to snub Cleverley like this.
"Certainly our programme is a full one, but as a player and as a manager I've always felt that there is only one way to go into a season...and that's to try to win every game.... While we are in four major competitions we shall try to win four major competitions." - Joe Mercer

What is this award about? Is it the four best players, the four most enjoyable to watch players, the four most enjoyable from a journalism perspective players, or what? Also, who gets to vote? If it's only 20-50 recognised football journalists, then I can imagine the results being pretty standard - it's probably 90 % van Persie, the MoTD pundits being ordered to vote for Rooney due to this being a Euros year, Neville disobeying and voting for Scholes, and Shearer just slapping an 'x' on the page after 15 minutes of looking bemused, which happened to land on Dempsey (no offence to the lad, but Shearer is more widely considered to be mentally challenged than Dempsey is considered a great footballer).

Dempsey or Scholes have performed better than than Hart, Lescott, Kompany, Aguero for starters ? More valubale to their teams over the season than Silva & Yaya Toure ?

I wonder if there are any stats to back that up ?
