Derby "Hand of God"

Postby spiny » Thu Apr 26, 2012 6:32 pm

A question for oldies, historians or anoraks.

Around 1960, Alex Dawson, the burly Rag centre forward, famously clearly punched the ball into the City net and the goal was given. There were no cameras to record the highly controversial event which anyway was overtaken in the media by Maradona's World Cup effort and by the Denis Law backheel in derby folklore.

Can anyone give detail?

There are a few on here that have a big interest in the archives. Gary James also comes on so he might be able to help. There is always john68 who has forgotten more than I will ever know. Although thats not his fault.

Gillie,
If it wasn't for Kath, I'd have no need to take the fuclers off in the 1st place.

Anyway....the game you are seeking took place at Maine Road on 4th March 1961. The rags won 3-1. Alex Dawson scored their 1st with his hand. City full back Barry Betts missed a penalty for City, then Charlton scored their 2nd. Dave Wagstaffe made it 2-1 (should have been 1-1) and Pearson got their 3rd.

Interesting team that night, A very young Steve Fleet (was part of the Academy set up recently) replaced Bert Trautmann (not sure why), Lievers, Betts, Shawcross, Plenderleith, A very very young Alan Oakes, Colbridge, Hannah, Barlow (the same who was part of the Frannie Lee takeover, Wagstaffe.....and a very young DENIS LAW.

It was only a couple of months after my very 1st trip to the swamp to see my hero Bert let in 5 goals. Shitter of a day.

Chapter n verse.....another satified customer....bill at the end of the month...now for the pisstakes.

It makes me feel physically sick that you referred to a goal for them against us as "hand of god", however I was not aware of this, i'll try and erase it from my memory again asap :o)
