The Geordie fans today--Big Thumbs Up

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

I think the boos were just them trying to help their team, hoping it would put us off. We should try it with QPR.

The 'where were you' etc is deliberately sung by oppo fans to wind up our fans imo. Nobody is that stupid (well, apart from rags).

Don't know about you but as far as I can tell, the first time it was ever heard was City fans singing it to Newcastle fans, I think when Brian Horton's team played Keegan's Newcastle team.

Never really had a problem with the Toon of recent years, home or away, and I have been known to shake a few hands before and after games; most can take the banter as well. Back in the day though, that was a bit different.

Totally agree with Kippax opening statement.

Geordie fans I encountered were really great, easily the most pleasant fans I've met in all the away games I've attended.

Well in geordies!

They sounded like a bunch of cunts and the booing/whistling was from early on in the first half....despite the fact that they were playing quite well at that point.

I heard that chant too. Won't hold it against them tho. Common sense isn't required when trying to help your team.

Seriously guys - you are picking up the wrong feel of the Newcastle fans from the TV coverage - they were indeed outstanding - and indeed very gracious. I would make the following observations:

I (along with many other CITY fans) started off in the Black Bull and the Geordie fans were very supportive - with the view that they wanted us to win the league - and this would help soften the blow if we beat them. They were even sporting about the CITY fans walking around with a life-size cut-out of Alan Shearer decked up in a blue scarf - laughing at the 'Alan Shearer is a blue...” songs.

I was in with the Newcastle fans just below the CITY fans (and with a fucking magnificent view of the Ya Ya goals!!!) and whilst during the game there was plenty of support for their team- I was particularly impressed that a lot of fans at the end turned around and looked up to the CITY fans and clapped – went on for quite a long time.

In the bar afterwards there was only warm words and respect for CITY – there really was – and they really want us to win the league

Re the booing – yes it was focussed at De Jong – and perhaps people can understand that. And yes it started for a while in the 1st half – which was after Ya Ya got booked – for what looked like (in real time) perhaps a bad tackle – but just stuff really. And re the ‘”where were you when you were shit....” chants – that was only briefly and pretty mild – not at all by the the full crowd – not even sure our fans (who love that been sung as we have a great answer) even bothered to make much of a reply.

I echo Kippax – both fans were fantastic – and the Newcastle fans deserve a positive mention – roles reversed if we were going for champions league – would the majority of our fans been so magnanimous? I like to think so - but.....

But especially well done to the CITY fans – they often out-sung Newcastle – and that takes a lot of doing – fucking great day – which will be made more special if we get it done on Sunday

There were two of them in the Mad Hatter in NYC on Sunday and they were good blokes. Being outnumbered they didn't have much choice, but me and a mate were in the Newcastle end at the 1976 League Cup final, we kept pretty quiet most of the game but at the end the Geordies in the row in front turned and said "away then lads, ye shud be celebrating louder than that." Or words to that effect.

Absolutely amazing considering the location of the away section and the small allocation to us.

Well done lads!

Slight distraction - but a very clear memory of mine from the 1976 game.........

After thumbing a lift from the M6 junction (those were days heh - imagine doing that now) I enjoyed the game immensely as you would expect – then having been offered a lift back I headed back to the van.

As I was standing in car park across came the biggest bloke I have ever seen (it certainly looked like that at the time) all decked in black and white asking “....are you a CITY fan???...” Honestly – I have never before or since got so tempted to deny being a CITY fan – and I might have done if I was not covered in blue and white scarves etc.

After answering yes, I can still hear his reply as he leaned over – his face inches from mine breathing beer all over me and saying “....fucking good game – but if you was a united fan – I would fucking eat yer....” I was shitting myself

Juat had a quick look at the post-match thread on the geordie fans website:
http://www.nufc-forum.com/nufcforum/ind ... c=45061.75

Only positive things to say about CITY - this is a good one that seems typical of my day up there:

Re: Newcastle v City Post Match Thread

Pardew dancing and worshipping the Gallowgate was the highlight of the season for me

I like the mjaority of the City players, I like Mancini and I like them as a club, seen them 3 times at SJP and always been in good voice and brought plenty up. Would much rather they won the league than Man U as well, so for those reasons, I am not too disheartened we lost. We battled well and matched them for a lot of the game, that little bit of class (plus money) shone through for them in the end.

Hart seems a likeable guy, clapped the Gallowgate and Kompany clapped our fans as well. In fact, we clapped their team off the pitch and it was the second best atmosphere I've heard at SJP this season, it was superb.

First time I haven't been too upset/p***** off by a loss. Citeh are the only team we've failed to take a point or more off. After such a terrific season, it's hard to be p***** off or angry, just so proud of the players and management, makes a change to have such a likeable group of lads.

Quality night out as well, loads of us chanting with ten or so City fans down the Quayside. Just ended up singing anti-Man U songs in the end

It's suprising to read some of the stories in this thread considering the amount of hatred that there is supposed to be against our club.

Just to support mcfc1632's view about the booing.

I concur that the booing seemed to start shortly after they had a couple of men booked and we seemed to get away with a couple of rash looking challenges about 15-20 mins into the game and it obviously reached a crescendo with de Jong's entrance. Took it as a compliment actually because we were obviously subduing them.

Like I said, not all fans would have had as good as an experience of the Geordies, but many of the bad times quoted here are from Yesteryear. With regard to Lockeren, the city fans hardly covered themselves in glory on that trip either with trouble in Gent, Zele and Charleroi.

But anyway the point of the original post was to praise both sets of fans and not condemn.

Fair do's 1632 and Kippax.....will defer to you both as you were both there. Came over really loud and quite vociferous on TV I can tell you that but hey ho...who knows....maybe the broadcaster turned it up on purpose (.....joke) ;-)

Fair play mate, I was up there on Sunday and had a laugh with the Geordies I came across. Just avoided the usual haunts because of trouble in the past. Glad you had a good un either way
