The crackle

Postby Tony P » Fri May 18, 2012 7:02 pm

On every replay on Aguero's goal, from every angle, the original Tylergasm, Hart and Clichy's bromance, Bobby's mad dash, the super slo mo, there's a crackle on the soundtrack. What is it?

A tear in the space-time continuum.

If people weren't already out of there seats, could it be that?

I notice something similar in the CB1 when people get out of their seats in unison, but its possibly more of a "wumph"

Its high frequency saturation.

Since audio went from open reel tape recording to digital certain volumes and frequencies are beyond recording capability, its simply due to sheer volume (soundwaves too concentrated in succession), cheap microphones could be the cause in the example of a poor mobile phone recording or on a cheap tape player but unlikely in professional use, it is most likely down to sheer volume. The open reel magnetic tape had the elasticity to flex under duress and still imprint the accurate data whereas although digital is superior in almost every way it does have its limitations.

(In other words... we were loud as fuck!!)

It's the accumulated noise from around the world as Rags open packets of tissues, realising they've not won the title.

You're forgetting that sounds travels slower than the pictures. The sound is therefore rags opening packets of tissues cos they think they've won the league.

If you listen about 30 seconds after the goal you can hear the sound of thousands of egos being shattered.

I haven't listened for it but, as Sandman says, it's probably a result of the sound level being too high for the digital converters.

In the old days of analog tape, you could actually overdrive it to distortion & it produced a pleasant harmonic response which you can hear on many old recordings; it didn't show up as a 'crackle' or audible distortion (unless you went to the extreme).

If you record to digital & go over the limit, you get a really nasty kind of distortion.

Normally they use limiters which kick in to stop the sound exceeding that level but the noise we produced may have been more than the usual threshold is set for as we are: The Noisy Neighbours.
