Alternative to penalty shoot outs

Postby blues-clues » Fri May 25, 2012 11:27 am

Now that the Germans have failed to win a penalty shoot out for the first time ever, Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs.

Apart from the team that speaks the best German, or has the worst haircuts, what options are there? Golden goal, silver goal, remove a player from each team after each 5 minutes. Shots on target? Corners?

Is there really ever going to be a "fair" way of differentiating two teams that cannot be separated by goals scored after 90 or 120 minutes?

A good old fashioned re-match is the fairest way, but we're never going to go back to that. It's just not feasible with tight fixture lists, TV-schedules, advertisement deals, etc.

I reckon teams should be allowed 1 extra substitute during extra time, which will allow teams to replace knackered/injured players, or change formation.

Allowing only three substitutes with the potential for 120 minutes of play often stagnates the last 25 minutes or so of normal time, in my opinion.

Have the penalty shoot out at half time in extra time if its still drawn .
Did I makethat up or has it been floated before?

So you know what the result will be already, before the second half, if either team fails to score in the second half?

I didnt get that either. But i'm not the brightest at the best of times.

I think Blatter's aim however, is to completely remove the penalty element from the game as UCL and WCups etc are being decided on a fair amount of luck if it goes to pens.

yeah
the team that wins the shoot-out has to avoid defeat, the team that loses it has to win.
The shoot-out only determines the result if its still a draw at full time (but with less pressure) No heroes, no zeroes.
The last 15 minutes could be "park the bus stuff" and the nature of the game changes, but better that than the current alternative, and the team that loses the shootout will go shit or bust
Bit like the last 15 at the Etihad

your right Alex it was mooted a while ago and done at youth level where the penalty shoot out was done after the final whistle of 90 minutes and before the extra time was started. This was so the result was known and it would stop negative play from both teams in extra time and ensure the 30 minutes would not be a walk about playing keep ball with neither team trying to score.

actually, have the shoot out before extra time. Now I know I've heard that idea before

golden goal with no goalies
Berbatov wins golden boot, spends following season on the bench while his team loses title on goal difference. Well played, Fergie.

Lets face it, for the outsider penalties are great drama. From a commercial point of view you can see that they are very attractive and Blatter will have included that in his briefing.

Matches should be resolved by some sort of football skill and penalties are an integral part of the game. They give the individuals a chance to create a result where the team has failed.

the team that has the most players whose names starts with an A should advance, clearly
they didnt invent the alphabet for nothing

all joking aside, it would be horrible if penalty shootouts were ever banned from football imo
sure it's cruel on the side who loses but it's an exciting way to determine the outcome of a game, also for neutrals
and both teams get at least 90 mins, sometimes even 180 mins, to win the game before it comes down to penalty's
in many ways 'the team that scores more goals away from home advances' rule is more unfair than penalty shootouts
you might as well take away penalty's during the game also then

I think the alternative should involve products from the sponsors - so they drive around the pitch playing Ford polo after drinking five pints of Heineken.

Could make it a bit like Ice Hockey where the [player runs with the ball from the half way line and shoots, the keeper is not allowed to leave his area and the outfield player is not allowed to enter the area. The outfield player is only allowed advance movement and has 15 seconds to get his shot off. This is sudden death immediately as soon as the game is finished and only goalkeepers are allowed to do this until there is a result LOL

There you go, problem solved
