Was talking about this with someone who doesn't watch football a week or two ago.

Penalties might be arbitrary, and sometimes unfair, but the spectacle is someone lost, imo, if you go to a replay.

Why were gold and silver goal scrapped to begin with?

Keep playing the game (extra-extra time), taking one player away from each team every 5 minutes.

I'd like to see that as tactics would still play a big part.

This has definite mileage but go straight to it after 90mins!

Start extra time with one man less then one more off every five mins.

First goal wins

Managers have to tell 4th official who they are taking off without knowing who is coming off for the opposition.

Would love to see this tried out

Was thinking the same.

That would certainly be more exciting than a penalty shootout! :D

I still think the golden goal option should be implemented. This forces teams to go on the attack, as opposed to kicking about 30 minutes. Have a few extra sub as well for the tired legs.

Agreed! i think we're on to something. :)

The atmosphere/anticipation when the board went up for the subs would be unreal!

It would definitely have to come in straight after the 90 else there's a danger of a 60 minute + ET.

Could you imagine an all Manchester FA Cup Final with a Kompany - Rooney 1v1 battle to settle it. haha.

1. Golden goal rule in extra time
2. In the event of still no score either the team with the most shots on target.
or a panel to judge which team played the most attacking football to give a points decision based on agreed criteria.

penalties are a thick way to decide a match, although exciting, very unfair....a team can put 10 men behind the ball and 'play' for penalties which has often happened.
What about playing on until someone scores? to open ended, match could go on all night, logistical, security, social problems etc.

What about playing extra time and if no winner then 'awarding' the match to the most offensive or attacking team.
For example the team that won the most corners were attacking more yes/no? It would be easy for the ref to count corners or and the team with more shots on target although harder to establish amount of shots ON target. % of possession of the ball during the match? Whoever has the ball the most is usually the more offensive team trying to win the match.

That sounds basically like the rules of Ready, Steady, Cook adapted for football...

On the open-ended game, I like the idea, but obviously then it's impossible to have 'half' time unless the ref's a clairvoyant... Would you swap ends every 15 mins, or just have one long kickabout?

I reckon a fucking midget could smash his face in...Barton is a typical "bully someone smaller than me" type.
Tevez would have knocked ten bells of shit out of him if he was given a free pass...and Ballo would bitten his head off.

I hate bullys like Barton..and Ive batterered plenty like him in my mental days.

Both teams field bikini clad cheerleaders who have blacked up faces and sing 'Mammy' in an Al Johnson stiley. John Terry gets to decide the winner based on 'Shag or Slag', where he has to shag one team and give racist abuse to the other.

For any lawyers reading, it doesn't have to be Terry. It could be another footballer, say Suarez.

biggest genitals.

Bonus, it works in the women's game as well, so not gender-specific. You have huge meat-chimes ladies, you win.

Simples.

Sounds like with a bit of refining the best option to me.That to me would give it to the team that deserves to win.
