"10% of World Population Are rags"

Postby Niall Quinns Discopants » Wed May 30, 2012 3:40 am

Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

LULZ!

I asked arandom sampleof 5 lads in my cab tonight...5 were City fans and 1 supported Leicester... I can safely say that 80% of the World's population are City fans, 20% support Leicester and there are absolutely no rags fans at all in the World.

Kinda sad that if so many fuclin billions of people support the rags, they have difficulty attracting a mere 75,000 of em to their games.

Many of these 650 million fans are not even fans. At the place I live, people simply claim to be manure fans just because they have heard of it. They donot even know the name of the entire squad, except for shrek. They only watch one match in the entire season and claim to be "lifelong" United fans. Seriously, ignore these numbers. They don't mean anything.

659 million people watched "their team" go tits up.

Really enhances the experience. How many watched us win the league? We are so bitter......

Of course not.
I'm guessing max 40% of population has slightest of interest in football. Out of those maybe half have more than passing interest in the game. That's 20% of world's population. And even that is quite optimistic, I'd say. To claim that half of them "support" united is nothing short of laughable.

I'm pretty sure the study was conducted in "have you ever heard of Manchester United" fashion.

This is merely a marketing exercise designed to increase the interest in the partial share offering due to take place in Singapore (I think) which would if successful would generate more cash for the Glazers to withdraw from their Manure bank.

It should have happened about a year ago but was postponed due to finance market conditions and with the failure of the team last season they have got to get it off the ground before they fail again next season.

Which, if we apply the same logic as the rags' commercial people, means that 90% of the world's population were cheering on City.

When I was on my honeymoon in Thailand in 2008 I came across a local in a shop and he was wearing a City shirt. He still claimed to be a United Fan though.

Could not care any less about these kind of fans, for all I care United can have 10 billion of those.

I suppose it depends on your definition of what 'supporting' a team invloves.

All the statistics I've seen so far add up to 664 million of the 659 million, and that's not including Europe, Canada, Australia or Central/South America & the Caribbean (apart from Mexico).

Terrible estimates.

Edit:

Here we go:
Guardian-
Of the 659 million, 173 million of those who named the club unprompted as the team they "followed" were from the Middle East and Africa, 325 million from the Asia Pacific and 108 million in China. Only 1% of United's fans are from the UK, the club said.

Add these from Teamtalk-
North and central America is also a growing area for fans, with 24million in Mexico and 34million in North America.

That's 664, isn't it?

The definition used was 'What football team do you follow?' without giving any hint regarding nationality or club. Basically, those that have never watched a football game will give United as an answer, especially in SE Asia, simply because they're a club they've heard of. I thought the poll was quite open about that.

Makes as much sense as their stats. What proportion of the world has no interest in football (say all women, under 5s and Americans)? If that lot add up to 5 billion, which seems a reasonable number, then around 25% of the football supporters support the rags. Don't see any issue with those stats at all.

The most factual thing in his statement was that the rags finished first.
