But it's not just the having of talent, it's having the ability and the balls to push through your ideas.
When you look at how far the club has progressed on and off the field in the last few years it's barely recognisable. Yes the injection of money was a huge factor, but let's not forget how he steered us through some very difficult times under Thaksin, and veered us away from what could well have been administration. He was heavily involved with bringing the new owners in, to the degree of selling the history and sleeping giant side of the club as well as much of the financial side. Although much of the financial side was dealt with by Amanda Stavely (Thankyou Amanda)
But the pace with which the club has progressed is nothing short of phenomenal turnover increasing from about 87 million in 2008/09 to about 153 million in 2010/11, and that figure will rise significantly over the next two year returns. Yet again you could put much of this down to the injection of funds and the beginning of a succesful on field period.
But away from the pitch it is comforting to know that the club has at last started listening to the fans and treating them as partners as opposed to customers. With many of the ideas being taken up. You only have to look at our website to see how far ahead we are of the rest, couple that with the fanzone, the invite of fans to the kit launch and even the finalising of the detail to get the tram system to the ground. There are also the overseas initiatives, the agreements with U-tube, many other sponsorships and developements that are currently in progress, video games the list goes on and on. All of these have had Garry signature on them.
I agree that I have had the advantage of being able to speak to him on occasions at length and whenever I have he has always spoken with enthusiasm and passion about ongoing projects and the club and I believe that when you are passionate about something then you are prone to the odd gaff, I know I am, can you honestly say that you are not. With perhaps the exception of the Uwe incident, I don't really see much wrong with what he has said, I quite liked the Milan "bottling it" comment as it show how angry he was with Milan and how much he cared about the club. He's as much a Blue as many.
I for one would be more than happy to see him given a role within the club (possibly at the end of a cooling off period) perhaps heading up an overseas developement programme, or even back as chief Exec at some stage. A personal opinion is that we lost a fine CEO when he went and we are still finding it difficult to replace him. Which possibly goes to prove that he was very much indeed good at his job, and maybe there are CEO's with as much talent, but maybe not all can deliver.
There you go, I said I wouldn't get involved, and look what you've gone and made me do LOl
