Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!
by Leedsblue » Tue Jun 26, 2012 8:29 am
Manchester City are targeting Newcastle's Fabricio Coloccini and Liverpool's Daniel Agger as possible replacements for Joleon Lescott, 29, who could become the odd man out at Etihad Stadium.
OK, the above came from Talkshite but it is not the first time I have seen either rumour but to replace Lescott - that just seems like madness to me.
I have not heard that Lescott is looking to leave and he does not need replacing on football grounds in my view, certainly not by either of the above.

The report lost any credibility when Talkshite was mentioned.
On the centre-half issue, after Kompany and Lescott we need another decent player there as Savic and Kolo are major drop-offs. Indeed the next best centre-half after the 2 principals is Micah.
Might be worth sending Savic out on loan to see if he does develop, keeping Kolo as the 4th choice and signing a half-decent c-half like Colocinni or the like, due to the amount of games we will be playing. When one or both of Kompany and Lescott were absent last season, we looked far more vulnerable at the back than we should have.

I don't see that either of those players will be brought in to "replace him" but if anything happens to him or kompany we need better backup than we currently have - one or both of those 2 players would make me feel a whole lot more at ease than toure and savic

At the moment we don't need a replacement, we need cover. Vinnie and Lesco are the best pair of centerbacks in the world, at this time.

I don't think it's a replacement we need nor would I say it's cover that we need. I'd say we need competition. Also, if we could bring in a centre back that has more composure on the ball than Joleon it could benefit us in Europe.
I'm not dissing Lescott btw, I just believe that sometimes his brute force is not required in Europe and a more cultured centre back in his place could be more beneficial.

I still think Kolo can do a job for a game or so. Also think Micah could do the same.

At the moment we have two good centre backs, and we will keep them. Another is needed badly, many have been saying it for months now. It should be the priority.
The messing around in defense last December/Jan very nearly cost the league.

If we sign one, it should be somebody with pace imo. Both Vinny & JL lack it. That would give us a different option for certain games.

He has 'a' pace.
Its just the tactical nous, positional sense and ability he seems to be missing.

We get Dedryck back from Bolton next season. Surely he adds some depth. Could we rely on him to do a job for us?

Judged on the couple of performances i seen from him last season i'd say no. It's madness to think that season before last Mancini started him ahead of Lescott against Arsenal.

only issue i can see with lescott is if they are afraid of his knees blowing up in the middle of a chumps league game.
Or maybe they think he can't play every game in a 4 competition season, even if his knees don't blow up (not unreasonable for him or kompany imo), and want a cb to come in not just as a back up, but to play a sizeable portion of games and push lescott.
I don't think our cb depth is up to snuff at the moment. Currently we have pill popper, 2 young lads who have been prone to major slip ups, and a marauding right back. Think we need at least 1 specialist there. On current form, there shouldn't be anyone brought straight in to replace lescott, and I don't think there would be.

Shocking Lescott was probably one odf the best Player for England at the euros and for city the season just gone.
But Macini has always had a gripe with him i think, but he's been solid and dependable all of last season and is definatly a key player for us.

Lescott needs competition to keep the cunt on his toes, also if hes injured we have noone the same or even better than him to fill the void.

OK I'll bite on this one. Why do you think Macini has always had a gripe with Lescott?
