Robin van Persie returns to Arsenal and an uncertain future
Van Persie undergoes medical on first day of training • Arsenal displeased by striker's refusal to extend contract
Robin van Persie has had his first face-to-face encounter with Arsène Wenger since declaring that he would not sign a new contract at Arsenal when he reported as scheduled for the first day of his pre-season training.
The club captain, whose return had been delayed due to his participation at Euro 2012 with Holland, underwent his medical assessment and he and the manager sought to put a professional front on what has been a deep fissure in their relationship.
Van Persie shocked everyone at the club with his statement on 4 July, which was posted on his official website and effectively said he wanted to leave because he disagreed with Wenger and the board of directors "in many aspects … on the way Arsenal should move forward".
Wenger had the greatest reason to feel let down, and not only because Van Persie's statement weakened Arsenal's negotiating position with clubs that covet him, chief among them Manchester City.
Wenger went to great lengths last season to protect Van Persie from questions about his future, which became an issue when he announced in September that he would not open new contract talks until the summer. Van Persie's deal has 12 months to run.
One of the pressing issues concerns whether Van Persie will be on the Arsenal flight to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, for their pre-season tour of Asia, which also takes in Beijing and Hong Kong. Arsenal play City at Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium on Friday week.

The touring situation mirrors those of Cesc Fábregas and Samir Nasri last summer, two players that wanted to leave Arsenal at the time. Fábregas, who would sign for Barcelona, did not tour Malaysia and China because of a muscular injury but Nasri did travel. On a tour that was notable for the volume of promotional appearances made by the players, Nasri did no PR work. He went on to sign for City.
Arsenal are preparing to take Van Persie with them, reasoning that, as with Nasri last time, he is a fully fit member of their squad. The situation will change only if he is injured in training or a potential transfer becomes significantly more likely.
City appear to be the only club with the means to pay a massive fee and salary for a player with a questionable fitness record who turns 29 next month but there remain obstacles even for them. Their ranks are bloated with expensively paid strikers and they must sell some of them before they can consider a move for Van Persie, which will not be easy.
Emmanuel Adebayor is poised to sign for Tottenham Hotspur but either Carlos Tevez or Edin Dzeko might have to go, too, along with Roque Santa Cruz. Uefa's incoming financial fair play regulations are on the minds of the City board.
Arsenal want a quick resolution to the affair but City might reason that it is in their interests to bide their time. Wenger continues to hope that Van Persie can be persuaded to change his mind or that, if City cannot make the deal happen, the player will refocus for the coming season at Arsenal.
Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.

Espanyol target City winger
Espanyol are keen to bring Vladimir Weiss back to Spain on a permanent deal but are struggling to pay City's £2.4m asking price.
The Slovakia international spent last season on loan at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat, managing two goals in his 28 appearances as Espanyol finished mid-table in La Liga.
With his future at City looking bleak given the abundance of talent they have in attack Weiss is thought open to a permanent move elsewhere to continue his career.
Espanyol manager Mauricio Pochettino is thought to have been impressed by the 22-year-old last season and wants Weiss back at the club.
However, the Catalonia outfit can't afford to pay City's asking price but hope they can strike a deal to buy half of the player's ownership rights.
The Spanish giants aren't the only club interested in Weiss though and City could look elsewhere, with three teams in Italy thought to be monitoring his progress.

Manchester City hand duo trial chance
Manchester City are running the rule over a pair of trialists on their pre-season tour of Austria.
The Blues continue their preparation by meeting Dynamo Dresden in Innsbruck on Tuesday night.
18-year-old Croatian striker Mario Jelavic and Israeli midfielder Nir Biton will be handed a chance to impress

Man City set to beat Arsenal to signature of French teenage sensation
While Roberto Mancini remains busy trying to sign some of the world’s biggest names, Manchester City are also keeping an eye out for younger prospects, and could be ready to bring in 17-year old French sensation M’Baye Niang from Ligue 2 side Caen.
Niang made 23 appearances for the Normandy-based club last season, and despite their relegation from the French first division, has many experts talking him up as one of the biggest talents the country has produced in years.
City have been quick to jump on the trail of French Under-21 international after seeing the youngster spend a few days training at Arsenal, with Brian Marwood, the Football Administration Officer at City, said to have approached Caen with a request to have Niang come to Eastlands for talks over his future.
The Citizens are hoping that they can swoop in for the player ahead of Arsenal, and are ready to offer Caen an impressive £6 million for the 17-year old who they believe can become one of the world’s best strikers in the coming years.
Marwood has over the previous few seasons been trying to improve the quality of the players developing through City’s youth academy after manager Mancini expressed his unhappiness over the inability of the club’s youth system to groom stars

ON THIS DAY - OFFICIAL CLUB BOLLOX
Saturday 17th July 1976: City’s Mr Dependable, Alan Oakes, finally left City for Chester after giving solid, reliable service to the club for over 18 years. With 665 competitive starts under his belt, he remains the all-time record appearance holder.
Oakes was a quiet unassuming player who was overlooked at all international levels for England. Oakes was happy to let others take the limelight yet was vital to the glorious all-conquering Mercer side of the late 1960s and the management showed their faith in Oakes by naming him captain for the 1968–69 season.
Consistent right up until the end of his days at Maine Road, he was named City’s Player of the Year in 1975.

Sunday 17th July 2005: Shaun Wright-Phillips completed his £21m move to Chelsea, a record fee received by the club. The popular winger was the first Academy graduate and his sale brought in much-needed funds to the cash-strapped Blues. The crowd-favourite returned to City three years later for less than half the fee he left for.

Thursday 17th July 2008: Goals from Martin Petrov and Dietmar Hamann gave City a 2-0 UEFA Cup First Qualifying round, first leg lead over Faroe Islands outfit EB Streymur in Torshavn. It was Mark Hughes’ first game in charge and a game City rarely have to break sweat in

Chelsea leading race for Edinson Cavani
July 17, 2012

One-time Manchester City target Edinson Cavani is closing on a move to Chelsea. The Uruguayan, who scored three times for Napoli against City in last season's Champions League, is in talks over a £35m move to Stamford Bridge according to reports. City boss Roberto Mancini is an admirer of Cavani, along with his former Napoli team-mate and now Paris St Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi. City are concentrating on their pursuit of Arsenal forward Robin van Persie.

If true, Chelsea are really strengthening this year, first Hazard and now if Cavani follows, they'll be our main competition this coming season and the rags can maybe fight out the third place with Arsenal. I don't like this news one bit though and really hope it's all bollox. I'd rather we go after Cavani than RVP, he is younger and would fit in our system too.

And what about the FFP though? How come every time there is a news (rumor) about Man City buying someone, FFP is discussed first up but with all other clubs, not even a mention?

What concerns me at the mo is that Van Persie rates us as his 3rd choice behind Juve and the Rags. I want players that want to play for us first and foremost, not because other clubs couldn't come up with the right deal. Needless to say should we get him he'll be saying some 'City were the only club on his radar' type bollox .... for £20+mil, I really don't want the one season wonder tbh

The fact that some on here have questioned Chelsea with regards to FFP, you can be sure that the likes of Plattini and Beckenbauer have as well. On that note an interesting snippet from an aquaintance who lives in Germany ...

The German FA and Blatter for years big buddies with Beckenbauer always in there as well have had a tiff. After the corruption revelations the German FA called for Blatters resignation last week. Now Blatter pissed off by the betrayal has said they should keep there mouths shut cos the 2006 world cup being given to Germany was bought, he said voting was 10 to 10 and when a new vote was called for one member left the room (the New Zealand guy?) Germany won 10 to 9. When asked if he was saying corruption was involved he affirmed it.
Which for me raises the question if he knew about corruption there why did he keep quiet - shot his own foot?
And there is definitely something with Beckenbauer and Russia getting the World cup 2018 hence Beckenbauers appointment as Russian ambassador for sport being paid an undisclosed sum by Gazprom

Getting rid of Kalou,Malouda and Drogba does NOT give enough room in the wages to get all these players Chelsea are signing they arent giving a fuck about FFP plain and simple.

Oh and as it goes i'd happily sacrifice Dzeko for RVP.

where have you got that idea from Chinmeister? He's said absolutely nothing on the subject whatsoever....and I've not heard anything from any remotely half-credible sauce that suggests the above is the case.

if you don't like him because he's quite unpleasant; fair enough but I don't think the above is based on anything factual or half-factual whatsoever re his preferences

Chelsea have 20 points to catch up (on us AND Rags) so an overhaul is inevitable.
We only need a new striker if Tevez gets unsettled and signs are he's taken root, so RVP will have to look for another club.
FFP is obviously very much in our thinking which I presume is why we won't buy until we've sold and we won't go mad.
We do NEED some recruit(s) in middle of midfield and defence though, and having compromised last year (Hargreaves/Pizarro) I really hope we get someone in at a high level on a perm contract

Ant, I think he had a fantastic season last year, playing in nearly every game which means his recrod now stands at 110 odd appearences in 7 seasons. Apparently he told Arsenal yesterday that he'd prefer to go to Juve first (can't see them affording him personally) then the rags.

Granted its reported media bollox which is why I put it on this thread from today's Independent (it would help if I posted the article I was referring to thou, wouldn't it!!!).

Robin van Persie wants to go to Turin rather Manchester
The negotiations over Robin van Persie's future have been complicated by the Dutch striker having indicated to Arsenal that his first choice of the three clubs pursuing him is Juventus.
Van Persie has not ruled out the possibility of going to one of the two Manchester clubs, and his first choice from those two would be United, but if possible he would prefer to go to the current Italian champions. Of the three, Juventus are the least financially powerful but in an ideal world the player would rather leave the Premier League than play for one of Arsenal's rivals.
Negotiations to sell Van Persie are expected to develop this week with the player's representatives keen to move the situation along. The club have been told that it is Juventus whom Van Persie would prefer to join and it is Arsène Wenger's preference that he would not go to Manchester City, but there are serious doubts over whether the Italians could come up with a deal acceptable to Arsenal. The asking price is thought to be between £20m and £25m with Van Persie seeking a five-year contract worth in excess of £120,000 a week contract. Both sides, the player and the club, are agreed that any deal will not hinge on a question of money for Van Persie – if it did he is well aware that his best option would be City – although it does now appear to come down to whether Juventus can formulate a deal.
Juventus had been favourites to sign the Napoli striker Edinson Cavani this summer but have not yet done so. The club are still recovering financially from their demotion to Serie B after the 2006 calciopoli scandal, and posted losses in their last published accounts of £75m for the 2010-11 season. Like all leading European clubs they are also trying to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.
At 29 years old, with a less-than-perfect injury record and the prospect that he will be a free agent next summer, Van Persie, for all his qualities, is not a simple player to arrive at a price for. There has been significant discrepancy on what he is worth to the clubs interested.
United would like to do a deal for the player but they are aware that they are always likely to be outmuscled on the question of price by City, if it comes to that. City have stayed in touch over Van Persie in spite of knowing they are third in the pecking order.
Both clubs are obliged to wait to see whether Juventus can come up with the kind of package that would convince Arsenal to do the deal. The Gunners' players leave for Malaysia on Saturday, arriving on Sunday ahead of the first game of their three-match pre-season tour of Asia, a week today against a select Malaysian XI.
It is agreed that it would be best for Van Persie and the club were there to be some resolution on his future by then, in light of his statement on 5 July that he would not be signing a new contract at the club.

Chinners, has not every single player we have ever gone in for, only signed for us because Utd or Chelsea, Scunthorpe, Accrington Stanley etc weren't willing to pay enough ?

Why should Van Persie be any different ?

It's a good strong point Ted ... maybe I'm just bias as I'd rather have RVP for free next summer rather than paying £20mil now for a 29 year old who ends up getting injured again after a season off .... maybe I've trawled through so much bollox tham I'm starting to believe it!!

I agree. I can see clearly what Van Persie could bring us but I can see the drawbacks too & I think that if we just upgraded in a couple of areas, we wouldn't need him anyway.

I suppose Bob would see his signing as a direct assault on the Champion's League though rather than building over a few seasons. I can see where he's coming from but I don't mind building with younger players personally.

So far they've announced two signings. Even if Hazard is on some ridiculously high wages, Marin sure as hell isn't. I bet those two don't make as much as Drogba, Kalou & Bosingwa combined. Then there's the possibility of selling some players like Malouda (who didn't leave yet), Sturridge or Benayoun.

I don't get people who are hell bent on questioning their approach re FFP as they're doing the exact same thing we did last season.

For the record; we spent around 80m last summer (50m net spend), Chelsea are barely half way there so far & need to replace one of their most important players in Drogba.

This.

I remember Adebayor apparently rang Utd and "begged them to sign him" before he signed for us. Tevez "really wanted" to stay at Utd but didnt, Milner "really wanted" to go to Utd but signed for City, Nasri of course "really wanted" to sign for Utd but ended up at City, and Aguero of course "really wanted to go to Real" but signed for City. Im sure I also read similar crap about Ya Ya and Silva too but on we go.

No way on this earth would Utd pay £20m for a 29 year old, it isnt happening so take them out of the equation. As for Juve - yes, I can see him going there and quite frankly hope he does as I think 2011/12 was Van Persie's cum shot season and we are best leaving well alone.

I suppose Bob would see his signing as a direct assault on the Champion's League though rather than building over a few seasons. I can see where he's coming from but I don't mind building with younger players personally.

Ted, from that you are saying that Bob has made it clear that he wants him. Excuse my ignorance/blindness but I haven't seen this, what's been said mate?
