Ramadam.

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

ant london wrote:Yeah the thing about Islam (in relation to this subject) is the fact that the Prophet said that alcohol was "haram" (edit...interesting BiB...I didn't know it specifically referenced wine) which is why Muslims by and large don't indulge in boozing.

BUT...the Koran said nothing about any narcotics so lots of people in this part of the world won't drink but will happily smoke weed (...or worse) and have no theological issue with that...even though in substance lots of those indulgences are more harmful to the body (which, in my interpretation, is what the Koran is saying is sacrosant so you shouldn't defile by boozing or, for example, being tattooed).

A bit like the fact for "Halal" meat cattle are slaughtered by having their throats slit and being bled out. At the time this was the most humane way to kill an animal with minimal distress. So the practice continues...even though there are nowadays much more humane ways of killing animals. The dogma of the book overrides all interpretation.

A bit like the pork thing for Jews and Muslims - trying to keep pork safe is tricky in a hot climate, especially for a nomadic people. The best way to stop people killing themselves doing something is to tell them that their god says it's bad.

With alcohol, the countries that first became Muslim had already worked out the benefit of boiling water before drinking it, whereas northern Europe had to drink beer to avoid catching something nasty. If they'd tried Islam in England first, the followers would have been dead in about three weeks.

Sort of back on topic, I do think Ramadan had a slight impact on Yaya last year and it's hardly surprising. I'd find it very difficult to do and I'd hardly class myself as being a professional athlete. This must be the worst time of the year, too, with the heat (sometimes) and long days. From a selfish viewpoint though, it's good timing for City as it's over when we need him back

actually mate....your post just did make me alive to another mitigation. The sunset in the UK is waaaay later than here in North Africa/Middle East. Sunset here currently is 6.40pm.....and it is fully dark by just past 1900.

In the UK when I was home last month it was still "light'" at almost 10pm....but I assume the sunsrise is suitably delayed vs the Mid East.

So I'm not sure how important it is in retrospect?

Meant about the time of year rather than location. In a few years, it'll be a month later in the year, meaning less daylight. Best time therefore has to be December when the time for fasting is very much reduced.

Think we do get more daylight than the middle east though - places like Iceland will be having 24 hour daylight now, so England must have more than places closer to the equator.

Also, I'm fairly certain that the Koran states that if to not eat or drink could cause you physical harm then you are not supposed to stick 100% to the fasting. So I'd be pretty certain he may take on board some fluids and light nutrition on days when they are training hard or playing.

Spot on, plus the over-riding rule of observation of the islamic faith is that you provide for your family above all else. If you are providing for your family, eg, working, it is permissible to observe prayer, fasting etc as well as you safely can without endangering your livelihood and the security of your family

I have the solution.

Send Yaya to train with our brothers in Dubai for the preseason, he can have tea at the normal time and get up at a reasonable hour and be fully of beans for training!

I do remember thinking early last season he seemed knackered after 20 mins for quite a few games into the season.....

I think that got bandied around on here a bit much and has somehow become accepted as fact.

The reality is yaya sometimes tried his runaway train impression to get us moving and then sucked air for a few seconds. The human body tends to breathe deeper after a lung busting sprint.

Palus....seems that your grasp of Arabic is as shit as your English. There are no precise translations from Arabic to English...especially if you are ultimately writing an Arabic word in English in the case of the book in question. Arabic is phonetic and so all three...Koran, Kuran, Qu'ran produce the same sounds. There is no "correct" one of the three you dumb fuck

Shame on Ant and Paul S, let's hope a minor ban for both of them will make them reflect on adopting a less abusive style of posting. Let the moderating begin.

Palus do you ever read back what you type before you press send. I would not ban you for being abusive but for typing incoherent dribble, therefore dumbing down the entire board.

I merely stated some facts....maybe the dumb fuck part was a bit much but he doesn't know what he's talking about...and I'm talking about language NOT religion.

And PALUS....I live in a Muslim country, and take a fair bit of interest in the culture in which I live. And can speak a not insignificant amount of Arabic and have to deal with the translation issues between Arabic and English. So on that point I am pretty happy I know what I'm talking about.

Fair enough, reading Palus makes you think that before you are allowed to use the internet a qualification in GCSE English Language or internationally equivalent is uploaded.

i heard you can do you Ramadan at a more convenient time as long as you get permission from your mosque, I hear a lot of footballers do this if it falls during the season

yep, I don't even think you need to go as far as getting permission but I guess lots of people would ask their Imam for guidance.

Same applies to the sick and pregnant women and v young kids most notably who are also not supposed to fast if this would harm them etc. They, instead, can do it later in the year when not sick/pregnant.
