it's really quite simple, much easier than the offside rule. They are not only our historic local rivals, but also our main rivals in the battle to win the Premier League over the next few seasons. So their financial strengths and weaknesses are of great interest with regard to their ability to challenge us in the future. Hope that helps...

That's a very reasoned argument JF. I'm more interested in their financial woes because I hate the cnuts.

If they miss out on CL then they really are going down the toilet.
On a side note, I think this is the year where I win my yearly bet with rag mates that Fergie finally dies - I have lost a fair amount over the last few years on this particular bet...but this could be "THE YEAR".

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: ALEX FERGUSON has released a statement about Manchester United’s planned share issue, insisting that he will not gain financially from the move by the Glazer family.

“Being aware of the media coverage that is currently ongoing I felt, on this occasion, that I should make my position clear to the Manchester United fans,” he said.

“In regards to suggestions that I have praised the Glazer family because I stand to financially benefit from the proposed IPO , there is not a single grain of truth in this allegation. I do not receive any payments, directly or indirectly, from the IPO.

“Ultimately, I run the football side of this club and in order to do this, you need backing from above. The Glazer family have let me get on with my job – there is no interference or obstruction, only support.”

Ferguson said he felt insulted by the suggestion he might benefit and was keen not to damage his relationship with the fans. “My decisions and beliefs are not based around what is best for my personal financial gain,” he added.

“That is an accusation that insults me. If that was the case, I would have left Old Trafford a long time ago.

“I am speaking out because I do not want a situation to develop whereby the media and other parties create a rift, however small, between myself and any Manchester United fan.

“I’ve spent 25 years of my life pushing this club forward and not only could I not have done it without those fans, I do it for them.”

Meanwhile, Ferguson has given the biggest hint yet of how United’s defence could look on the opening day of the new Premier League campaign – with the long-awaited return of Nemanja Vidic particularly welcome.

News of Vidic’s impending return is a fillip for United fans, who have not seen their captain in action since he injured cruciate knee ligaments against Basel on December 7th, 2011.

United kick off their season at Everton on Monday, August 20th, a game that will come too soon for the injured centre-backs Chris Smalling (metatarsal) and Jonny Evans (ankle).

Throw into the mix the fact that Fábio has been sent on a season-long loan to Queens Park Rangers and Ferguson’s back four will almost pick itself.

“Chris Smalling is out for 10 weeks with his metatarsal operation and Jonny Evans is still just in light training,” Ferguson said ahead of the three-game pre-season tour which begins in Olso on Sunday against the Norwegian side Valerenga. “They’re big losses at the moment and they will miss the start of the season.

“Rafael is away and Fábio is away on loan so there are four defensive players that we don’t have for the back four positions.

“We do have Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, though. That will be the back four on tour. Hopefully, we don’t get any more injuries as it would leave me a bit short.”

It's going to be interesting to see the price post-launch. If they've downgraded them already then that also downgrades the value of the club in it's entirety. There value was $3bn I believe whereas this valuation takes it somewhat down to $2.3, which Forbes had recently valued them at.

It will also give them less cash to sort out their finances, especially after costs.

Still, it gives the Glazer's some money in their back pockets and keeps them in power. It's not all bad.

Originally offered 250m for sale, think they are upto 329m, its not doing too badly even though the initial price was lower

Anyone remember the partial floatation in the late 80s when united needed the money to compete, they did it again a year or two later, then had no choice to compete other than to go plc. Despite the myth that united only ever used their own money to fund transfers

History repeating itself?

Not really a sinking ship mate, more one that's listing. The truth is that they've got it away and have money in the bag. The question is though, 'Where does it go from here?'.

The IPO went off at $14.00 and swifly moved to $14.05 with underwriter backing. During the day there was minimal activity compared to the early showing with some increased activity near the end of play to ensure they finished off at $14.00 again. Nothing can be taken from this apart from it's now out there and once the underwriters back off then we'll get a clearer view of what traders/investors think of this stock.

What's funny from a Blue point of view is that the money being used to pay down the loan is also going to be hit for the costs burdened on the club by the IPO. So again, the Glazer's get the larger slice of cake while United bring their interest payments down by little more than a few million.

PS. I am no expert in this subject, I just read what's out there and, in particular, that AndersRed bloke sees too know his business.

I do agree with and stand corrected by your clarifying point.
I was just enjoing the broader picture of that neverending milking by our beloved Agents Glazers... ;)
