Unfortunately they dont deduct points for style of football or bottling it in major finals, but The formula is on the fifa website and is pretty simple to be honest.

That's the thing I was making! Trying to rank football teams according to some formula is pretty stupid! Same thing for players.Time and time again you see a game and then watch Opta or Actim rankings for that same game and you think "what the hell, that can't be right". That's the beauty of the game!

Uruguay won the Copa America in 2011. It is arguably the hardest tournament to win. Do you think Spain would have won 2 Copas sandwiching their WC? I do not.

Their fixtures were:

(15) Chile - 1.1
(32) Peru - 1-1
(19) Mexico - 1.0

(7) Argentina 1-1 (p)

(32) Peru - 2.0

(25) Paraguay - 3.0

Sorry mate, with those fixtures, I would even back England to win that lot, let alone Spain. That has to be one of the easiest tournament runs in international football history.

Fair enough the weighting of the Argentina game will have been high, then weighting will have increased for the semi and the final even though it was against shit opposition. But yes, absolutely Spain could and would have won that tournament, as could most of the European nations who are in the top 10

my point is that ANY team has a harder run through the Copa than the Euros...i believe that.

i think the Latin presence of the last WC quarters is indicative of that. 4 of the 8 teams from South America. Much smaller number of footballing nations than Europe, but more represented...

Obviously assessment factors such as footballing ability and tournament performance of the past 30 years are ruthlessly expunged, and the rankings do factor in such talents as Britishness, bulldog spirit, parking the bus, scouse underachievers and a manager who is a nice chap.

Oddly, several American sports leagues such as Baseball and Basketball contain a lot of players from outside of the US and A.

Michael Johnson thinks you're stuggling in sport in general as a result of the college season system and lack of world competition. That's a fact. Jamie Staff (former UK gold medalist cycler/BMXer) who is now a coach of the US cycling team has said one of the hardest changes he is still in the process of making is in the mentality of the riders who just want to be the best in the US rather than the best in the world. There's a strong isolationist mentality amongst a lot of your compatriots and it can be counter productive when the rest of the world moves on in some sports. (You're on the rise in footballing (soccer) terms though, no one can deny that).
