Drenthe

Apparently we are in the lead to sign roysten drenthe? He is a free agent following release from his contract at Real Madrid.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story ... he?cc=4716

Think there is anything to this? Did pretty well during his time at everton, made a big move to madrid early in his career and was a completely non-entity. This has also happened to VDV, so I won't necessarily count that against him.

Sees himself as a very attacking fullback, would he be a replacement for Kolarov if the earlier rumors about him leaving were true? Would he have a more attacking wide position for us? Is he even worth signing on a free, for what would most likely not be too large of a wage. Back up player? Rotation?

What do you guys think?

Attacking fullback?

Did I have too much to drink last season? I swore he played upfront. Am I getting him confused with someone else or did Everton just not have a striker?
Tracking back is overrated.

he did play solely in attack for them ... i don't know if he was considered a striker or a winger or am or what, who knows with everton. I think we can be pretty sure they did not have a striker, but earlier in his career and at real madrid he was always a wide player. Winger or Full back ... or attacking wing back as the case might be.

He seems to have been around for a long while and he's only 25. But if Real let his contract run down and release him, is this not a red flag that maybe there is baggage we don't want?

He's a fruitcake, and that's being unkind to fruitcakes.

It's agent talk, putting City's name about to talk up his chances of a move to Turkey or similar football paradise. As for "replacing Kolarov", no, he's had a good pre-season, he's got great character, and he crosses a ball better than anyone in the squad.

I never said we should replace Kolarov. I was simply stating that there had been talk about Kolarov leaving to go back to italy earlier in the summer, and if that was actually happening, MAYBE it would necessitate this kind of move.

I do acknowledge that this could well be agent talk, was just interested as a free replacement/backup might be something the current acquisitions team would go for.

fair enough, though Moyes was nothing but praise for him while he was on loan and in that article it mentions he only wants to go to a team with CL footie.

for what it's worth, he seems to have talent/skill ... but previous to his everton loan, hadn't been so great about the application of it. Just an interesting story ... but what was your opinion of him at everton? I thought he played well and was generally dangerous in attack

He was constantly in trouble at everton, a constand pain in my arse fantasy football wise!! Anytime he played he did well for everton but he was in and out of the team and lots of personal issues, as someone said hes a fruitcake and we are in a position where we dont need to take chances on fruitcakes so its a pass for me. Would still like to see him in the prem though.

PS he played left of a front three for everton(or midfield 5) i wouldnt trust him anywhere with defensive duties!
derby day the scores were level,
then the goat was fed by neville,
silly boy should know for sure,
feed the goat and he will score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He also tried to sue Feyenoord when they didn't want to sell him to Real Madrid after his displays at the U21 World Cup, or Euros, whichever it was.
He desperately wanted to go to Real Madrid and look where it has got him. Complete dick.

wasn't aware of those problems, but I did know a bit about the feyenoord stuff that another poster mentioned ... don't think there's any worry of him coming here then, Mancini would fry him.
