Chelsea have turned down an offer worth £30 million from Manchester City for defender David Luiz, according to The Sun.

City manager Roberto Mancini is believed to be looking to bolster his defensive options after learning that Micah Richards will be out of action for 10 weeks due to an ankle injury.

Speculation surrounding Luiz's future at Stamford Bridge emerged when the Brazil international was left out of Chelsea's squad that defeated Reading 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Luiz, though, later clarified on Twitter that he is currently nursing a knee injury, a move which saw him fined by Chelsea, according to The Sun.

Nevertheless, the English newspaper goes on to claim that the former Benfica centre-back is still part of Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo's plans and Manchester City will need to significantly up their offer to capture his signature.

Luiz joined Chelsea in a deal worth £21 million from Benfica in January 2011.

There were big rumours linking us to Luiz before he signed for Chelsea if you remember ? Quite a few of you were saying 'get him in now' as a replacement for Lescott ?

That gives me a dreadful, sinking feeling that there could be some truth in this. Also, it's not beyond imagination that RDM could want to get rid of Luiz & buy a proper defender, looking at the state of Terry & Co.

It may just be an enquiry rather than a bid though. There are a lot of cbs suddenly being linked with us, so we may be talking to a selection from which Bob will make the final choice.

If Bob does sign him, I will try not to cut my wrists & will assume that he thinks he can teach him how to defend & we will see a great player in two years time.

It would mean of course that his defensive signings include Boateng, Kolarov, Savic & Luiz.

He played LB with Benfica, he still lacks awareness and he's out of position most of the time. He's a work in progress, and he has the attribute of a great CB in the making.

Agree with that. I wanted him as leftback who could cover for Lescott if needs be (whihc obviously has been changed into "replacement for Lescott" now.....LOL). Granted he has been poor for Chelsea and haven't really adjusted well yet. But there's massive potential in there.

Chelsea need a CB as it is without losing one, Terry looks shocking and even slower than his running in treacle performances of last season. He wont be first choice for much longer if he keeps up his useless form.

I agree with this.Think he was one of Chelski better players last year.Would be quite happy if we got him.

That's exactly where he played for Benfica and Brazil (when he got his first caps... don't know where they use him now). I think right foot is his preferred but he puts in sweet crosses with his left.

I'd reserve the use of phrase "that's for sure" if you aren't really sure.

Yeah positional sense is a nightmare to say the least.He has a tendancy to get caught in posession aswell.I'm sure coaches are trying to knock this sort of shit out of his game.So far it's not working.

For as much good as he offers, his mistakes are shocking and usually result in more than a free kick from 40 yards. I would think if anything, us not getting him and seeing him play one year in the prem tells me he is not worth what Chelsea paid last year. That also said, why would they sell him if he is a vital cog for a team trying to win the league?

Im basing it on what ive seen from him in england, not the fact the he hasnt or cant play there more the he wouldnt be a success there in england thats for sure, make sense?
