City Analytics

Has anyone else taken any interest in the City Analytics data?

I downloaded it a while ago and was amazed at the amount of info involved. Every action of every player in every game, for the whole of last season.
If anything, there is almost too much info to take it all in.

Up to now, I have only had the time to extract the City players' analysis from it and have just completed listing Joe Hart's stats. If anybody is interested, you can download the stats from the OS.

Will post some stuff/opinions/conclusions from it when I get chance.

Looks a little complicated John but will look forward to your findings.

It's something that i do have an interest in having a look at but i completely forgot they were releasing all that data publicly so thanks for reminding me.

Must have a look and see if i can make any sense of it.

I looked at downloading it but I got the impression you had to be some kind of anal-ist, sporticunt or unicunt to qualify for a download.

Is any old pisshead allowed to download it ?

I downloaded it but haven't had a chance to run it through some 'borrowed' tools from work.

Beefers,
It's not complicated, just that there is so bloody much info,it is almost overwhelming.

I have managed to extract the City players from it, now I am in the extremely slow process of separating each record into HOME/AWAY/TOTALS and then trying to create a simplified list as an individual player overview. Itis the sheer amount ofinfo that makes it so difficult and time consuming.

Ted,
City are trying to create an interactive community with these stats and ask you to let them know in what way you are working with them. They then plan to link individuals who are working in a similar way with them into interactive groups. City seem quite open to allow people in.
I take umbrage at being classed as ANY OLD PISSHEAD....I consider myself to be quite a special OLD PISSHEAD...Go for it Ted, they will prove a very useful tool to use in your analysis.

Alex,
My thoughts were similar mate. When they arrived it was "WTF". You just need to take from them what you want.

Can somebody help please.

I have created a simplified list of Joe Hart's stats in Microsoft excel. They are in four columns but when I try to post the list on here, the separation of the columns disappears.
Is there any easier way, other than retrawling through the complete list and adding spaces, which is simply too time consuming to do if I wish to cover every player at some point?

I have also tried to cut and paste the excel into WORD and then on here but the same thing happens.

If that doesn't work, try first copying the text from Excel to the Notepad. That should make the text separated by tabs rather than being in table format. And then use the code display.

Thanks Gents,
I willtry the notepad method and could you please explain the code method. I haven't a clue about this but have seen similar posted on here in the past. Please PM me on how I can do that.
Thanks.

Because of the overwhelming amount of material in the analytics, finding time saving methods is crucial and could save hours of trawling through each individual piece of info. I have the Joe Hart stuff ready on excel to post.

Hi John

I too have subscribed to this, but still thinking of ways to make something meaningful. Nastasic Vs Lescott over the season should become more measurable as this seasons data gets released - as a topical example.

Anyway I posted regarding the highlighted part above just to inquire whether you were familiar with pivot tables within excel?

I`ve found it very easy to use once you get round the basics, and dread to think that you are going on a cell by cell basis when a couple of hours learning the basics could save you days & days of effort.

Apologies if this sounds insulting to your pc literacy skills :)

Johnny,
My pc literacy skills are quite basic, I've played around with excel for a while now and have never needed to try out some of the more complex stuff. I tend to hit a problem, scratch my arse for a while, experiment, then somehow find some way (usually convaluted) to sort it all out.

Is there any way to convert a vertical list (or group of) to horizontal and vice versa? That would help me enormously.
Also, despite the best advice of Noolie and He Just Blue Himself, having tried the code and notebook methods they suggest, The cloumns are still ill defined and I can't get them on here without having to go through them, spacing them individually.

Normally none of this was a problem but with the sheer amount of data, piddling through/time etc just ain't an option.

Thanks in advance

John,

Can you publish your attempts to paste into here onto the thread.

I`ve just had a go to see using straight copy & paste and it shows like this which looks fine to me:

Date Player ID Player Surname Player Forename Team Team Id Opposition
2012-04-28 28566 Abou Diaby Vassiriki Arsenal 3 Stoke City
2011-11-26 28566 Abou Diaby Vassiriki Arsenal 3 Fulham

Waheeeeey. Life is a classroom. My version of excel not the same as yours but I have now understood how to transpose this stuff...Thanks.
Also didn't know I could freeze cells....But now I do.

The straight cut and paste is fine when the items in the columns are of reasonably equal length Johnny. The spacing allows the columns to remain reasonably true. They don't remain true when the columns are not of the same length.
