I think more of a punishment was getting a player sent off at Sunderland where Wigan had most of the play but went on to lose after what I thought was a soft red card. Even more so when one of the BlackCats players did a very similar tackle towards the end of the game.

Yeah, Larsson's tackle was way worse than the actual red card offense. Sunderland were very lucky not having him sent off.
