I believe his plan was to use Yaya more aggresively in the second half, like he has done on a number of other occasions - Rodwell was the extra defensive midfielder who would probably have come on in the second half inorder to switch to three central midfielders and push Yaya more advanced. It's easy to have one player fuck things up when you have limited substitutions. And for the record we weren't playing 4-2-3-1 in the first half.
