All this bollox about moving him forward like he is supposed to be some 2nd striker is just that bollox.
He has won us enough important games playing the way he does.
Leave him where he is

But Mancini does move him forward & even does use him as a 2nd striker sometimes (not that I'm advocating Yaya as a second striker) & most of his best performances have been when used in that attacking midfield position.

Have you really never noticed this ? You honestly think he plays in the same role every game ?

The whole football world has been discussing this topic about Yaya's effectiveness when Mancini pushes him forward, for over a year & you are telling me you have completely missed it ?

If all you experts have been discussing for so long and he Bobby thinks its only gonna be effective at the end of game I think he knows better, sorry but think Bobby knows more about Yaya abilities than you.If it has been common knowledge for so long there must be a reason he is not doing it.

Ted knows everything, it's already established. Move on.

"In my career so far it's the most important goal. You score the goal in the last minute to win the title. You're not sure if that's ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

Thing is he is the best DM in the side.Better than Barry,Garcia,de Jong when he was here.Further up the pitch we have Silva and Nasri to do the AM job.
Yaya is also a world class AM but should I think be used there when David and Sami are having no luck.
I think the reason he so often starts deeper is because we have an abundance of attacking talent.

He isn't the best defensive mid in the team, for the reasons I keep pointing out in lots of games.

He is however better than most players in the world at dominating the centre of midfield & pushing forward. NOBODY played centre mid for City v Dortmund. There were five Germans & no City players there for large periods of the game. That is where Yaya should have been, with probably Garcia & Milner (if Barry wasn't fit) just behind him.

When he's there, he wins the ball with his strength & pushes the team forward. When he's deeper, he is a good passer but he allows players to run off him & it's terribly dangerous against good teams.

I have a slightly different view I think...........

For me, all credit to Ya Ya (yes I know that in reality, on this occasion, he had a pretty ineffective game) for professionally responding to whatever challenge/position the club's manager chooses to present to him.

He provides to his manager a range of options that he can either excel in or at the least be good at – how the manager chooses to select for any specific game is down to him. For me, Ya Ya is very professional in the way he handles himself – not even phased it seems by the seemingly total demotion of his brother – which is as should be.

As it was – we looked totally overrun in the MF against Dortmund – and other teams this season have ‘clued up’ and not just conceded Silva and Toure space – and yes – we need more tempo energy etc in MF – and yes – why not select Milner etc..................

But don’t dump this on Ya Ya – he is not picking the formation – he is professionally doing his best – and of course given how he has been selected has made him totally pivotal, any ‘off-game’ is going to have significance.

In this post I am not slagging of Mancini either – I think that he is right to seek to experiment / introduce new formations – and if the 3-5-2 was working well (or even at all) then we would be having different threads. The challenge for him , IMO, is to ‘throttle back’ now and re-introduce changes (such as CBs that can come out with the ball and feed a MF at the right time) – that is likely the future.

Anyway – credit to Dortmund – they demonstrated the one thing that I would criticise all at CITY from Mancini downwards – energy – effort and determination – we used to have that and need it back!!

We didn't play 3 5 2 v Dortmund, we played 6-4 with no midfield.

Ted - my reference to the 3-5-2 was not just meant re Dortmund - although I did feel that it was introduced for a period - including when we conceded. But we were being so quickly closed down and pressed (in the manner we need to do to others rather than have done unto us) that it was hard (at least for me) to determine precise formations.

That only strengthens my point (not really sure that my 'thoughts' on this are worthy of the description 'point') - that Ya Ya was placed into a role by the manager that made him utterly pivotal - the manager's choice. Ya Ya tried to fit the role – and the Dortmund approach to closing down rendered the formation totally exposed.

Whilst I mentioned that I was not slagging off Mancicni and do believe he needs to have Plans B, C and D ready to be used and tried and tested - I would have thought that against Dortmund starting with proven Plan A might have been the call.

You are right re formation (ish)

There was actually a period of about 5-10 mins after kolarov came on when we were just playing two in the middle plus clichy on the Left, i couldnt fathom what was going on

Yaya was fucked as he had nobody to pass to, rodwell was not showing, then when he did get the ball passing it on like a hot potato as he was swamped with bodies, and the forwards were way too advanced and not dropping to bridge the gap. Toure didnt stand a chance on Wednesday with the way we setup, and credit to Dortmund for doing their homework.

Personally i would have liked to have seen Dzeko off, milner on and toure pushed further forward just to give their midfield something to think about

I would really like to see us go back to a flat 4, with barry protecting the defence, toure and garcia in the centre, with aguero silva and tevez working their nuts off up front and rotating the one who drops deep.

I dont see why it ever has to be more complicated than that

I agree we attempted to play 352 at one point, but what I meant was we failed to actually acheive it.

We ended up with 5 or 6 players in our half, 5 or 6 Dortmund players in midfield, & 4 of our players stood, marked, 40 yards up the pitch. It was effectively, a 6-4 formation, or 5-1-4 with Kolarov stranded out wide & Yaya/Rodwell holding hands with our cbs. It was always a possibility one of them would get caught, as there was no out ball; the midfield wasn't actually there to pass to, just a bunch of Yellow shirts.

V Sunderland & Fulham, we ended up with our whole team camped in their half together. Imo, that would have been dodgy too v Dortmund but at least the players were together & could pass to each other, rather than 40 yards apart.

The way we played at times v Sunderland & Fulham, is worth persevering with. Handing over the midfield & pushing 4 up, like we did v Dortmund, is not. I saw Mancini do Similar with Inter, hitting long balls at Ibrahimovic, & it didn't work there either.
