In any game of football, each player has possession of the ball for about 2mins. There are 90+mins in a game. The TV follows the ball as do most fans, effectively most see a 2 minute slice of every player throughout the game.
Gareth Barry is the 88 minute man. Unseen, usually unsung. When Yaya goes charging upfield and the crowd is rising to its feet, Gaz Baz is the guy sliding 5 or 6 paces to the left or right just in case it all breaks down or in case Yaya needs an option. Nobody notices.
Tony Book was old and slow, we won the League with his ability to read the game and push and pull those around him. When Book was injures the next season, we were shit until Kanuary when he came back. Martin Peters was the fetch me carry me man of the 1966 World Cup winning team. Hurst got the plaudits. Peters supplied the space by his off the ball runs.
Maybe some of you at the game should watch Barry a little more closely. It'll be boring but you'll learn a lot.
I KNOW THAT YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU THINK I WROTE, BUT I AM NOT SURE YOU REALISE THAT WHAT YOU READ IS NOT WHAT I MEANT
