The greatest comeback in premier league history?

Postby Original Dub » Wed Oct 10, 2012 2:04 pm

I'm having a row at the minute with a rag mate. But it's on a public forum. Basically about this subject and how he reckons the 15 pt defecit the rags overhauled with newcastle was more impressive.

Can anyone tell me what date was it when they were 15 pts behind and how many games they had left to play? Or any other significant points I can jab the cunt with.

I know ours was the greatest and most unlikely come back ever but I need to hammer it home!

Cheers in advance.

Also, please feel free to use this as a celebration thread. It's been a while since we had one and I wouldn't mind looking back at highlights of those last six games again!

Now the cunt is saying arsenal overcoming united in 98 and leeds winning it in 92 was more impressive.

I wish my memory was better, will need all the help I can get??

I believe it was a 12 point gap over Newcastle. Pointswise, sure, it was more impressive but also more likely considering they were champions and used to it etc etc and it was NMewcastles first time in that posiotion. Ours was twofold, poor for even being behind them in the first place with our squad compared to theirs but impressive due to how we rallied back against the 'best team in the world with 20 years experience' (c) TM.com etc etc and doing them with just 6 games and 8 points.

Your 'mate' is a cent and appears to be windiong you up[ a treat .. he knows the truth

You could put it another way eg it was the biggest choke/implosion/bottle job ever seen in Premier League history.

'He's cracking up, he's cracking up, Fergie's cracking up....'

You could also tell him that last season was voted as the best season in the 20 years of the Premier League.

As we now know football never existed before the PL, therefore why bother living in the dark ages Mr Rag Cunt is how I'd resolve the discussion.

Mate, 2 totally different scenario's. The Rags had fallen 12 points behind well before Xmas due to the Toons great run of games, however, by Boxing Day games they had cut them back to 7 points after beating them. I think Newcastle completed a rushed signing of Asprilla that just pushed them backwards and United then caught up to them a couple of moths later after beating them for the second time that season. Newcastle picked up but the Rags already had it in the bag. For me, without Blue Tinted specs on, it was a combination of United doing their normal thing whilst Newcastle crumbled. Nothing like ours to be fair.

We were flying with United chasing. We then hit the dip through a combination of factors which turned a 5 point lead into an 8 point deficit. 6 games to go and the 13 point swing looked like we were just hearing the Fat Lady warming her larynx. They said that United always finished strongly but at the same time the stats showed that they dropped an average of 5 points in their last 6 games, so there was hope. We then went onto win the next 3 games after a wake up call at Arsenal whilst United flopped at Wigan, won impressively against Villa before losing the plot at home to Everton, a team that hadn't done anything under Moyes against them suddenly looked like bringing them down to their knees. 4-4 it finished, while we beat a relegation fighting side 2-0 at Molineux.

Then, the Derby. We spanked a United team who couldn't even get a shot on target. That was the turning point, it was all in our hands. All's we had to do is win both games and we were champions. However, unlike the Rags, they were up against 2 teams who were literally fighting for nothing (Swansea and Sunderland), their position in the PL was secure, whereas we were up against a CL chasing Newcastle and relegation fighting QPR. In fact, you could say that our last 6 were the harder run-in, but I'm sure a Rag would say otherwise.

We both won our penultimate games which left it down to the final game and what nearly turned out to be the final whistle. In many eyes the Championship was lost and Taggart had won the Battle of Minds once more, but no, we had other plans. The Battle Cry was raised and with nearly 100% possession in those last 5 minutes Edin Dzeko rose like Titan from the Sea's and placed an unstoppable trident through the dogged defence of QPR. A few minutes to go, United were celebrating, they knew it was theirs, surely City could not score again, the whistle had gone, all games finish at the same time (Taggart thought). But 2 minutes remained and QPR, fighting for safety hoofed it up the field. A Nasri challenge mean't a throw-in for them, our hearts sank. Why us, why always me!

Then, a former City player throws it up but a beast of man takes possession. Lescott, knowing the urgency required offloads it straight to Nigel De Jong. De Jong covers half a pitch before spotting the run from Aguero, knocks it into feet and his job was done. Aguero takes a touch before passing forward to Mario, but Mario slips and again it looks lost, hands on head we stand, praying, hoping for the miracle. And then it comes, a slide rule pass from an outstretched Mario that falls into the feet of Aguero who'd carried on his run into the box. It can't be .... he's going down, penalty ..... no, he's stayed up, he's shooting, he's shooting, fucking shoot, fucking shoot ........... and then, he shoots. The ball nearly forces it's way through the back of the net, we can see, can we believe it, is it true, have we won the league, can we celebrate ............. can we celebrate ............. we can celebrate, we can fucking celebrate ..........

I would go with nostalgia on this and go with our comeback this year.

Does Arsenal's win on Anfield in 89, if i recall, with Alan Smith scoring, etc + their 10 point comeback count?

Blubbering again. Fucker.
Berbatov wins golden boot, spends following season on the bench while his team loses title on goal difference. Well played, Fergie.

Surely the greatest ever comeback for any club was the City v Gillingham play off final, when thousands of City fans who had already left Wembley all returned.

Compared to the non comeback at Wembley in the City v rags FA Cup semi, when thousands of rags left Wembley and never came back.

In the league, last years derby at the swamp, when again thousands of rag fans left without any of them coming back.
