We were flying with United chasing. We then hit the dip through a combination of factors which turned a 5 point lead into an 8 point deficit. 6 games to go and the 13 point swing looked like we were just hearing the Fat Lady warming her larynx. They said that United always finished strongly but at the same time the stats showed that they dropped an average of 5 points in their last 6 games, so there was hope. We then went onto win the next 3 games after a wake up call at Arsenal whilst United flopped at Wigan, won impressively against Villa before losing the plot at home to Everton, a team that hadn't done anything under Moyes against them suddenly looked like bringing them down to their knees. 4-4 it finished, while we beat a relegation fighting side 2-0 at Molineux.
Then, the Derby. We spanked a United team who couldn't even get a shot on target. That was the turning point, it was all in our hands. All's we had to do is win both games and we were champions. However, unlike the Rags, they were up against 2 teams who were literally fighting for nothing (Swansea and Sunderland), their position in the PL was secure, whereas we were up against a CL chasing Newcastle and relegation fighting QPR. In fact, you could say that our last 6 were the harder run-in, but I'm sure a Rag would say otherwise.
We both won our penultimate games which left it down to the final game and what nearly turned out to be the final whistle. In many eyes the Championship was lost and Taggart had won the Battle of Minds once more, but no, we had other plans. The Battle Cry was raised and with nearly 100% possession in those last 5 minutes Edin Dzeko rose like Titan from the Sea's and placed an unstoppable trident through the dogged defence of QPR. A few minutes to go, United were celebrating, they knew it was theirs, surely City could not score again, the whistle had gone, all games finish at the same time (Taggart thought). But 2 minutes remained and QPR, fighting for safety hoofed it up the field. A Nasri challenge mean't a throw-in for them, our hearts sank. Why us, why always me!
Then, a former City player throws it up but a beast of man takes possession. Lescott, knowing the urgency required offloads it straight to Nigel De Jong. De Jong covers half a pitch before spotting the run from Aguero, knocks it into feet and his job was done. Aguero takes a touch before passing forward to Mario, but Mario slips and again it looks lost, hands on head we stand, praying, hoping for the miracle. And then it comes, a slide rule pass from an outstretched Mario that falls into the feet of Aguero who'd carried on his run into the box. It can't be .... he's going down, penalty ..... no, he's stayed up, he's shooting, he's shooting, fucking shoot, fucking shoot ........... and then, he shoots. The ball nearly forces it's way through the back of the net, we can see, can we believe it, is it true, have we won the league, can we celebrate ............. can we celebrate ............. we can celebrate, we can fucking celebrate ..........
