Dzeko

I'm not sure if he struggles to find space early on in matches which is why he isn't as effective when he starts a match - certainly goals against the rags, qpr last season and his goals this season have all come late with quite a few being on the break against a tiring team. I know he doesn't want to be considered a super sub, but surely all successful sides need a game changer on the bench & he's the best we have

Don't want to piss on his parade as I think he should be starting ahead of balo in ANY away game, in every league game and now that we pretty much need to win our last 4 CL games in all of those aswell and balo can have the FA cup away games, but I digress. He needs to be realistic and accept the fact that tevez and aguero are better than him and just fit our MO better. Then make sure when he gets the start because they will come with our packed schedule he does the same thing for 90 minutes as he does for the last 10 today.

He's showing desire that he wants to play, without moaning that he isn't playing enough. He keeps telling the media that he wants to stay as well. The lad's just being honest.

I was one that was bigging him up before he arrived and sure, he has had some rough patches, but I still think he'll come out well.
On Goals on Sunday, Coleman was talking about Dzeko as well and mentioned how good a player he is.

I've been thinking a bit about this Nige. John, do the stats sheet you have show Edin's success rate when he takes just one touch as opposed to when he has a chance to think about what he's doing? He strikes me as an instinctive player but things fall apart when he has time to think about things.

I disagree with this. I would not object to this last season, or at the beginning of this one. But after these eight matches all I can see is Dzeko has 5 goals, in about 300 mins, while Aguero and Tevez have 5 with round 900 mins combined... ??
So, at this moment, I cant say they are better than him.. depends what do you mean by "better".
They sure fit our style better, they dribble better, the ball control is evidently better, or at least it appears to be, but we're not gaining anything from that at this moment.

To me, Dzeko is our top forward at the moment, and the most dangerous. I want him in my team as long as he plays like he does now.
You simply cannot say for any player who is the biggest threat and best scorer at the moment that he should settle for some occasional start due to packed schedule and be satisifed with it, its nonsense. Isnt it logical to play your best team at the moment.
The form means a lot in football.
The most important thing for a forward is speed of thought. Top players read the game.

One touch, scores a goal, we wonder why he falls apart when he has time to think about things?

As a manager, I'd be wondering how I can get that one touch more.

I agree, but as people have stated on this thread, RM should get the team to play to Edin's strengths/the style of play when we're chasing games......I'd be happy with that! And I think we would rip teams a new back side in the process

Thing is, at the end of games, we give him the one touch stuff. At the start, we build up in a completely different way which really doesn't suit him.

I suspect he'll start tomorrow and we'll all be slating him on here again.

When you have great players, play to their strengths. If he's coming on from the start, play accordingly.

Is it about Dzeko's strengthens or the opposition's weaknesses? One touch football is fine when a side are stretched & leaving space, that doesn't really work when defenders are tight on Edin & that's when he doesn't shine - you are highly unlikely to stand off Edin at the start of the match, which is why it never works for him - its at those times when you use those intricate manoeuvres to open the defence & for that purpose Tevez & Aguero are best even if the results aren't shed loads of goals - it's about creating a base that encourages the opposition to leave space for us to exploit

Cant agree with the part about needing intricate moves to open a defence up. What do united do/have done that is intricate!

They get the ball and they press the opposition with pace and directness.

I can see the logic of wanting to play ourselves into the game at places like madrid or dortmund where we are the underdog and perhaps want to try to keep posession to avoid conceding, but just find it completely unnecessary against inferior opposition who mass the defences in front of us - often with our tricky players to carve teams open, we dont do it, so revert to basoc direct attacking with 20 mins to go usually in an effort to salvage the game

Its bob and his stubborn tinkering, dzeko could play for the start, particularly at home, if we actually went out with the intention of smashing fuck out of a team rather than pawing at the opposition like a lion cub would with a mouse

He doesn't struggle early on at all. We spend the first 15 mins pussyfooting around. That's not in his nature.

Anyway i've just had a vision that Mario starts tonight, goes into the box , gets fouled. A clear penalty, but Mario gets red carded for a dive !

So on that basis, i guess we'll win three or four to one, with Edin belting a hat trick in !
