Whos been worst value for money

Postby simplytolmie » Mon Nov 12, 2012 11:45 pm

As its international week thought I'd start a discussion around the worst value for money player ever at city.....

Jo £18m = awful
Caicedo £5.2m = more boxer than footballer

Wayne Bridge and Tal Ben Haim are tied worse for me. Both cost huge transfer fee's, collected massive wages and never contributed to the club once.

Caicedo at least chipped in with a few goals and might have remained a City player if the arab millions hadn't arrived.
I like to think Jo at least tried. He wasn't bad when he first arrived, Robinho's arrival prob helped, and Everton must have seen something in him.

Jo is my pick. Utter wank and a myth that he tried. Everton showed him up as very unprofessional.

Bridge was poor, but we struggled at lb for years. He wasn't great, but I wouldn't call him awful.

If you ignore the fact that we had him the 1st time and look only at his contribution after buying him, then 12m is a huge waste of money on SWP.

Scott Sinclair. We paid God knows how many millions for a player that doesn't appear to exist.

I'm sure he only cost around 8 million.

Badbuy and Big Fat Bob were ludicrous signings. Craig Russell and Gerry Creaney too. And Nigel Clough. All cost decent money, all contributed jack shit.

That's harsh on Caceido in the OP. He wasn't brilliant, but he worked hard and scored a few goals for us.

Jo was a complete waste of money, but when we bought him he at least had a reasonable goalscoring record (albeit in the Russian league).

But Santa Cruz has to go down as the biggest waste. The whole world knew he was injury prone and would never play for us, except for Hughes (and our medical team somehow!!!). A truly terrible signing.

If we're going a bit further back, then Lee Bradbury must be up there. We didn't have a lot of money at the time and to spend £3.5m on someone who was, quite simply, terrible was a travesty.

RSC as it was obvious to everyone worldwide, including the blind and mentally impaired he was never more than a one season wonder. I reckon the qpr chairman replied 'are you fucking joking?' When clueless asked for funds to waste on him.

It shows that our owners for all their perceived wisdom, were not at all wise a couple of years ago. But it also shows that they will back a manager.

The nuts and bolts of the deal will never really be known, but on the occasions he did play he did alright - i think he suffers from the same problem dzeko does now, he was bought to play in a footballing side, when he is not a footballer. He is good at one thing and one thing only, and if you dnt play to those strengths, you might as well not have bothered signing him.

If you look at the trajectory of transfer fees, Bradbury pound for pound was the worst and always will be, although Jo is up there.

For me though, I think the worst transfer in Citys history was Fowler, not because he was shit (i liked him), but because it broke up a very strong board losing bird and bernstein and this is what sent us into almost terminal financial decline, which was only rescued 4 years later by frank, then the sheikh.

You cant measure the implications of fowlers transfer in pounds, it nearly brought the club down with its long term implications

Corners were a problem even back then, he is very funny on the after dinner circuit I am told. Openly admits he was a disaster.

On fee paid, Santa Cruz and Jo as both were utterly useless and gave little or no return on the fees paid for them.

Bradbury is also in the conversation as he was totally useless. (Dis)honourable mentions to other complete wastes of what was either big money, or "big money" to us at the time, include Bobby Shinton, Steve Daley, Phil Boyer, Mathias Vuoso, Mikael Bischoff, Ged Brannan, and any Georgian not named Kinkladze

Roque Santa Cruz is in a league of his own for poor value. Mills was horrible, Bridge too.
