Who scores when?

Postby kinkylola » Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:49 am

Ran across this chart and thought it was pretty interesting ... pretty easy to understand, alphabetical list of teams with what % of their goals come in the corresponding time periods! Have fun!

Is the chart from this season?

So, deductions.....

- We're fitter
- We've got better strength on the bench
- We're mentally stronger as other teams switch off
- We like to put our own fans through the wringer

also, would be more useful if they'd added a total goals scored to date...

Interesting that only Villa & Reading start games attacking worse than us, but nobody finishes attacking better.

In between, we start the 2nd half worse than anybody bar Norwich.

Those stats are not good ones for the coaching staff , not at all. It proves they are not doing their job very well.

I should imagine the stats in Europe are similar.

Not good.

Interesting to see that only us and Swansea have such high proportions of goals near the end.

Does this table automatically update throughout the season? It'd be interesting to compare the stats every 6-7 games to see how things pan out with different clubs...

Fitness is the big thing. Blackpool managed to do surprisingly well against better sides (Villa, Liverpool) because they were extremely fit and able to keep plugging away until the end. They spent the whole pre-season running in sand.

For us, the quality of our bench is, as you say, another factor. But we do seem to outlast teams either way.

Swansea save energy with accurate passing and playing piggy in the middle with the opposition's one-up-top.

Blackpool always looked like they were running in sand to me, so it certainly worked.

Haha. They were woeful at the back but very lively in attack.

Don't forget how close they ran us. Twice.

They had a remarkable ability to stay in games.

No surprise to see the scum basically top the start of the game column (Stoke scored far less goals which skews the numbers a bit at this stage of the season). They're up there at the start of the 2nd half as well. Compared to that our numbers look appalling. 1 goal in the first 15 minutes, 0 right after half time. Dreadful.

Rubbish. If the tactics are just to keep the ball for the 1st 15 minutes of each half unless there's a great chance to score, then the tactic is working well. If we're supposed to score then it's not working, but neither of us know what the plan is

There may be an actual table somewhere that will update automatically, but this is just an image ... so sadly, no.

Another point made in the thread is that it isn't especially meaningful to compare against other teams, as all teams have scored a different amount of goals.

I think it's a decent indicator of when a team is at it's strongest, and I don't think that it's just coincidence where these goals fall. I think it's quite easily observable by watching games, even on television that we do not switch on at the beginning of games, or the beginning of the 2nd half ... but we do grow into the games.

Does also raise the question about the sensibility of people leaving early before the end of either half. You could have easily missed half our goals

Personally, I prefer the stats at the end of a game like PL 11, W 7, D 4, L 0

It is interesting thou and highlights a) our stamina/bench strength and b) that a game requires effort for 90mins and not just the first 75

Of course how silly of me.

Why would we want to score early in the first or second half ? What possible advantage would that give us ?

The plan is working perfectly, as you say.

I don't know what I was thinking.

If you could find a graphic for last year, I suspect it would look very similar. Can't remember the numbers now but I remember going into the QPR game knowing it would be nerve wracking due to us likely drawing until late on. Didn't expect it to be quite that nerve wracking though.

We score goals late due to the way we play - keep the ball, tire the opposition out and then punish them. We could play more like a Redknapp side, but Mancini's way seems to be more successful, like it or not. When we go for it in the last 15 minutes, we're exposed at the back. Do it for 90 minutes and you'd be punished, but you can get away with it against a knackered team who are hanging on.
