well we've got much better players now so in that sense we've moved forward but tactically there has been very little movement forward overall. If you think that our best game under Hughes, Portsmouth demolition, was over an year ago and so far we haven't had single run of steady performances, it's bit worrying.

Thats coz we're turning into an expensive Blackburn, all work and no flair. Where have all the little backheels gone?

I think you are pretty much spot on. Can't really argue with most of Hughes' purchases (Well I'm not impressed with Santa Cruz but overall) however I still think he lacks that little bit of what is needed from really top manager. Looking at our squad, I can't help but to think what some other managers could do with them.

You both may very well be right. I think this season will tell us everything we need to know about being able to judge just to what degree MH has "it".
If we didn't get top 4 this season I would be a little disappointed but not devastated and the plus side would be, as you both rightly say, we have massively strengthened the squad and set-up in place at City.
Personally, if we came 5th I would likely be minded to give MH and team another season to try to push on. BUT I would stand fully by the owners and board if they decided that they had not seen enough managerial magic in getting to 5th to justify keeping faith and opted to change personnel at the top.
If that were to happen I would be amazed if any incoming manager would feel the need to tear everything up on the playing side and undertake major surgery on the squad. Therefore, any new guy would hopefully need to merely add the odd man of his own and tweak things to get us to the next level.
My jury is quite honestly out at the moment. I am satisfied with the start we have made but a little frustrated. But the degree of frustration is really quite marginal. If we had won two of the six drawn I would be actually happy. Even if we'd lost one of the six. So we really are talking about tiny margins.
I'm determined to enjoy the season though and am confident there will be plenty to enjoy. That's why I'd prefer to err on the Hughes In side until such a position becomes stark in it's ridiculousness

1996 - Gullit manager - starts the ball rolling
1998 - Vialli - continues the development and wins a couple of tin pots
2000 - Ranieri - continues the development and then gets russian billions to play with
2004 - The "Special One" takes over and has 8 years worth of development and money been spent on the club to reach its final goal. He didn't turn it around in one season!
At this moment I'd say Hughes can be a Vialli and maybe deliver us a cup. In a couple of years we can then go for the top, top managers who only take the jobs that are already set up to win the leagues.

Until the new team is gelling then I cannot start another hate campaign, it is just not fair, so I will wait until the end of January to give my true opinion...........
