De Jong set to miss rest of season

Nigel de Jong has snapped the Achilles tendon in his left leg and will be out for around five to six months, AC Milan have announced.

Nigel de Jong's absence through injury is a blow for AC Milan

The former Manchester City midfielder, 28, came off injured midway through the first half of the Rossoneri's 4-2 win against Torino, immediately signalling to the bench that it was a serious problem.

A club statement on Sunday evening confirmed he had indeed suffered a complete rupture of the tendon and Massimiliano Allegri, speaking to MediaSet, dedicated the victory to the stricken Dutch international.

Allegri said: "The lads have dedicated the victory to Nigel, who unfortunately has suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon injury that will see him out for the season."

De Jong only joined the club in the summer in a move worth an initial £3.5m and, having already become a vital cog in Allegri's midfield, losing him for the rest of the season will be a huge blow for the San Siro outfit.

Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong will have surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon performed by the same Finnish professor who operated on David Beckham, AC Milan said on Monday.
De Jong suffered the injury Saturday in Milan's 4-1 win away to Torino, which left the Rossoneri in seventh place in Italy's Serie A 14 points behind leaders Juventus.
He will be operated on by Professor Sakari Orava, who patched up Beckham when he tore his left Achilles tendon during a loan spell at Milan in 2010, an injury which kept the English icon out of the World Cup as well as the following MLS season.
A statement from Milan on Monday said De Jong would have his operation "performed in Finland by Professor Orava at his Turku clinic.
"David Beckham had his operation performed by the professor as did Giuseppe Pancaro," it added.
De Jong was one of several summer recruits by Milan after the club cashed in by selling many of its squad including Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Club owner Silvio Berlusconi, however, has not yet confirmed that a replacement for the Dutchman will be brought in during the January transfer window.
We'll see," Berlusconi told Sky Sport Italia when asked if Milan would buy a replacement player.

Here's hoping he makes a speedy recovery - nice to hear he's well thought of by everyone at Milan.

MOVE BACK TO MANCHESTER CITY COULD BE ON CARDS FOR NIGEL DE JONG

MANCHESTER CITY may look to capitalise in the January transfer window following the news that Nigel de Jong has been placed on AC Milan’s transfer list.
De Jong has been deemed surplus to requirements by the Rossoneri’s president Silvio Berlusconi.
The Dutchman could be tempted now to swap Serie A and plot a sensational return to Premier League.
Man City fans remember De Jong well before he left for AC in the summer.
Berlusconi was quoted in Italian football site ForzaItalianFootball.com, as saying: “We’re disappointed, it is a real shame for De Jong. “We’re evaluating the opportunity of going back on to the market if that is what is necessary.
City have not been as free scoring as the previous campaign and have been leaky at the back too, having shipped 14 goals in their first 16 Barclays Premier League matches.
De Jong has featured in 12 Serie A games for AC this season.

Looks like they're using the same lazy source as the Telegraph - why would we sign someone who has just received a longterm injury? And why would Milan transfer-list someone who has just become long-term injured? I don't believe he is transerlisted at all.
