Whoa, my lad is sensible, 18 yr old and off to uni this month. I cannot afford to get him insured as it costs 4k on a renault scenic 1.4. The issue is the lifestyle and money associated with football. Not young males in general.

Not saying that's the answer but I think something that involves the law has to be done.IMO anything over 1.0 litre for a young boy is dangerous. There is so much tech available nowadays that I think something along those lines should be fitted to cars.
The stats(facts) show that the vast majority of motor accidents are caused by young men later on at night, thats probably some of the reason for your sons high quote.

Precisely. I had a £600 10 year old car and, looking back, was pretty sensible for a 17 yr old. But at many times, if someone had pulled out of a side street...

You'd have been in more trouble than if you had done the same thing now.

Teenage drivers can't be expected to respect the rules if they're not applied fairly to them. Laws limiting them have to be very carefully drafted because they're usually written by people who are completely unaffected by them and disinterested in the difficulties they may impose.

Go round telling young men that they can't be safe drivers and probably shouldn't be allowed drive, you'll get bad drivers who don't give a shit what anyone thinks.

From the Mail.

City youngster Meppen-Walter was NOT racing a friend before car crash which left two dead, according to police

Police have stated that Manchester City youth player Courtney Meppen-Walter was not racing a friend before a car crash, which resulted in the death of two people.

The 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving in September after the crash between his Mercedes and a Nissan Micra.

Kulwant Singh, 32, who was driving the Nissan, was killed along with his sister, Ravel Kaur-Singh, 37.

A GMP spokesman told Manchester Evening News: ‘The driver of the Mercedes, an 18-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been rebailed until January 24.

‘A file has been prepared and sent to the Crown Prosecution Service to make a final decision.’

The 19-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Golf was released from bail without charge and the spokesman added that the GMP were satisfied that the two cars were not racing before the fatal incident on September 1.

The police had been investigating whether the crash was caused by the footballer racing the other driver on Bury New Road in north Manchester.

Sgt Danny Byrne told the MEN: ‘Having reviewed all the available information and evidence, I am satisfied that the vehicles were not racing each other and the driver of the VW Golf is not involved in this incident.

‘A file of evidence has now been completed and passed to the Crown Prosecution Service for a decision on the driver of the Mercedes.’

Ravel Kaur-Singh’s two sons, aged 16 and 17, who were passengers in the back seat, are making a good recovery from the head injuries they sustained, according to police.

Explains why he was able to travel to Turin with the EDS and sat on the bench of first team once or twice. Club must have been pretty confident he wasn't racing.

The only thing it doesn't say is if he was speeding or not. It could've been quite simply a car pulling out.

Still tragic news whatever the outcome and it will remain with each party for the rest of their lives.

I was merely pointing out the curiosity that he was allowed to travel and didn't have his passport confiscated. If the lad was at fault i'm not sure the club would have risked the adverse effects of having someone potentially charged with taking a life in the first team (even if its supposed to be innocent until proven guilty)

Its horrible to think of two young people losing their lives so young I work in motor insurance there are many accidents where tragedy happens and no one is to blame. unfortunately the nature of insurance someone has to be assigned blame to avoid having to pay out on a claim.

Horrible story regardless of the circumstances.

I know every time we see a story about an ex academy player in trouble we always ask what is going on at the Academy to make these players better human beings. I do not look at any other football message boards but I willing to bet that every big club has a similar record in this department. I was reading a article about ex players who end up in jail and it is currently is a alarmingly high rate of players who have played football and end up behind bars.

Apparently, until the clubs caught on to it, alot of ex youth players who played in the north who knew that they were more than likely not going to get their contracts extended or make a millionaire living out of football were being used as drug mules to carry drugs down to London.

Man City's Courtney Meppen-Walter charged with causing death of a brother and sister by careless or inconsiderate driving
24 Jan 2013 17:30

The 18-year-old is accused of causing the death of 32-year-old Kulwant Singh, of Salford, and his sister Ravel Kaur, 37, from Cheetham Hill

Manchester City starlet Courtney Meppen-Walter has been charged with two counts of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

The 18-year-old, who was on the bench for the Blues' Champions League clash with Ajax but has never played for the first team, will appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on February 7.

Meppen-Walter was arrested after a devastating smash on Bury New Road which took the lives of a brother and sister.

A Mercedes collided with a red Nissan Micra and killed 32-year-old Kulwant Singh, of Salford, and his sister Ravel Kaur, 37, from Cheetham Hill.

Ravel's two sons, 16 and 17, were sat in the back of the Micra and are now making a good recovery.

A 19-year-old man who was driving a grey Volkswagen Golf at the time of the collision and was arrested, was later released without charge and will face no further action.

Police Sergeant Danny Byrne, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This has been a very complicated and sensitive investigation and we have liaised closely with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout our inquiries.

"As a result, the Crown Prosecution Service have now authorised two charges of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

"I know there has been a lot of speculation and media interest in this incident, but it is now more important than ever that we do not speculate about what happened.

“This case, and the facts, will be heard before a court and it is important we respect the integrity of that legal process."

The smash happened on September 1.

City did not suspend Meppen-Walter, of Middleton Road, Blackley, who carried on playing for their reserve team and was named in their Champions League squad.

I'm concerned to read that you think middle class kids have soft arses.

I've no experience of judging the softness of arses of kids, middle-class or t'otherwise, but I will say I fluppin well can't stand daft sweeping all encompassing statements.

Right, well name 10 top professional footballers with middle class background. I'll match that with 50 from working class background.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

The Laudrup brothers

I don't think it's about lacking 'hunger', I think it's about different priorities placed on them by both the school and their peers, and the fact that middle-class children are often made aware of career and further educational opportunities available to them. Are you seriously saying that lawyers and politicians don't have 'hunger'? I know this is a vast over-statement, and equally as irrelevant as yours, but you don't see too many of them coming from working-class backgrounds. Plus, selective schools (both private and grammar) seem to place more of an emphasis on rugby and cricket than on football. Are you saying rugby union (which is undoubtedly over-represented by players from middle-class backgrounds) is for "soft arses who lack hunger"?

Easy one to deal with that - footballers on the whole tend to be a bunch of mardy whingers who scream in agony from the slightest tackle. Rugby players continue playing with life threatening injuries - bit like Bert. I'm just narked about your broad statement that middle class kids are soft arsed. My honest view is some are some aren't. Ditto working class kids. Some are real cry babies others are hard as nails. This is the sort of crap also that bacon face espouses. Mr big labour supporter yet happy to be Sir Alex and drink £500 bottle of wine.

This also the reason why only one footballer has ever come out of the closet and the poor sod ended up topping himself. So let's have no more of this self righteous bllx.

Anyone watching the programme on BBC1 called licence to kill about car accidents. Courtney Meppen-Walter has taken part in it. I am glad that he took part so you can actually see how it affected the lives of those people involved in the accident and you can see how he was genuinely sorry for what he did. A very sad programme.
